BIOS stands for basic input/output system.....it is the most basic level of interaction between hardware and software.

Here (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/index.htm) is a pretty good explaination of what it is, does and how to do things with/to it.

ftpj BIOS is a term that stands for basic input/output system. BIOS is really the link between hardware and software in a system. The BIOS is a collection of programs embedded in one or more chips, depending on the design of your computer. That collection of programs is the first thing loaded when you start your computer, even before the operating system. The BIOS in most PC's has four main functions: POST (power on self test), Setup (system config. and program set-up), Bootstrap loader, and BIOS (collection of actual drivers). How do we monitor BIOS? If our PC is operating well and functioning well then we have a happy situation w/BIOS. How do we update/upgrade? Replace the BIOS chip itself on the Motherboard (safest) or with the BIOS flash method. Mboard websites can offer the BIOS flash method. The flash method is not for the novice. Improperly done you are dead in he water. But it doesn't take a Rocket Scientist. IMHO if your system is doing what you ask of it, leave the BIOS chip in Peace. Have an awesome evening!
