View Full Version : Can't install Zip Drive

I'm trying to install a zip atapi drive about three years old.
I'd tried using the old installation cd version 1.0. It has a window to assign drive letters, but only has four choices, which are filled with current drive letters, A:\ C:\ D:\ for my cd-rw and E:\ cd-dvd. I can't assign a drive letter with this window.

The system detects the drive in the post, and in the bios. But there's no icon in My Computer and it doesn't show up in the system information at all.

I downloaded the new installation version from Iomega but that did'nt help.
I tried the add new hardware program, and this is a PnP device it did'nt help.

How can I assign a drive letter to the zip drive?
How can I get the system to detect it or see it in My Computer?
Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the replies

You probably have some sort of software that is linked to each of the current drive locations....you may be able to temporarily shift one of the drives to another letter, get the Zip installed then shift its letter, then change the drive back...also try going into safe mode and make sure that the ZIP drive doesn't show up there...if it is in Safe mode remove there and then try the updated install program. Maybe you'll need to uninstall the dvd and reinstall it...and whatever player softwre it uses.

Hi;

You don't say which zip drive that it is (100 or 250), but nontheless, try this Iomega link which discusses the problem;

Just pick your operating system.

Thanks for the replies,

Well I tried all different ways, took out dvd stuff and tried to install zip drive, no good. I was at the site you mentioned danleff and that did'nt work either. Tried with the old and new software also.

One thing that was constant since installing the drive was a yellow ! on the Primary IDE Controller(dual fifo). When I disconnected the drive everything was fine.

Hope someone can come up with something else.

just out of curiosity, why are you trying to atach a ZIP drive if you already have a cd-burner? You can already archive 6 times as much info as an ordinary ZIP disk can hold. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

And if you need a ZIP, i would go with a USB model; much less hassle and a lot easier to port around. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Everyone keeps asking me that same question.
Well I have all my records on zip disks, and I have a zip drive.
And I thought I could get to them easier. HA!
If I can't get this installed, I have no choice.

Do you have the jumpers properly set for master and slave? My past experience has taught me that even the recommended positions for the jumpers isn't always correct.

The only thing I didn't try was setting the jumper on slave.
This is the only drive on the cable, so it's set on master. What would happen if I set the jumper on slave?

Quite right sea! i used them extensively myself, still got a few laying around here somewhere. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I also liked the superdisks, but when cd burning became feasibly inexpensive; i jumped in with both feet! This is one of those times with technology didn't just leap, it catapulted!! Just wait until the DVDr format is settled and you can burn up to 20gb's on a removable media!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

And Lori wasn't trying to be mean, i realized that was probably why you were wanting to install the zip drive-maybe you can find a friend who has an installed ZIP drive and cd burner, then you could transfer your records. Or, try your local PC shop-they'll probably be able to help you recover those files for a modest fee.

No I wasn't trying to be mean. 3 years ago, I didn't even know how to turn on a computer. Now I just finished building my first one. It went well, accept for a few things. But I'm learning as I go along. I thought putting in a zip drive on the new system would be easy. Especially since I need my records.
But I still have the old system. I'll have to use floppies if possible, to transfer.
Thanks

What MB are you using ? Its possible that RAID controller is causing the problem, check your MB manual if there is any information.
I've abit BE6-II Rev2 and I could not use the ZIP drive as a slave with HD even though I was not using RAID. I installed the ZIP as a slave to CD-ROM and Win ME assigned B as the drive letter. It did not work with any other letter. I'm still wondering why ?

I'm using an Abit Sa6R mb. I'm not sure what happened, but the primary ide controller showed an yellow exclamation mark on it when I installed the zip. When I removed it everything was fine.

I had the zip drive on an old Houston Technology M575 before this, on its own cable and ide connector and that was fine also.
