I had a problem with my main comp and I saved the files I wanted on a different drive on a separate computer over a network. Now I pulled the hard disk out and put it in one of my older computers to retrieve the files and actually compassed it with drivespace. I don't understand how to decompress cause I see no option for it but to delete it all, but I don't want that. Is there a utility to decompress that drive with out having to lose my files? Also the properties say its a FAT and not a FAT32 also it says its space was alot lower then it actuly is. Both computers are running 98 and the drive was the master and now a slave.

Try this:

Click the Start button, and select Programs/Accessories/System Tools/DriveSpace.

Select the drive you want to decompress, pull down the Drive menu and select Uncompress, and click the Start button.
(NOTE: If you haven't backed up your files, click the Back Up Files button. After your files are backed up, click the Uncompress Now button.).

How you turn a hard drive from a FAT to a FAT32?

It's done when you're formatting prior to installing your operating system normally but in System Tools there's a selection named Drive Converter. At least in 98SE.

Start> Program> Accessories> System Tools> Drive Converter.

Hey I did what you said and when my computer was done what it was doing it said "There is not enough memory to convert the drive. Edit your config.sys file to remark (REM)some device drivers. Edit your Autoexec.bat file to REM some memory-resident programs" Does that mean I need more memory ram or disk space. If you need more specs on the drive just ask me. Thanks

I would use Safe Mode to do it, that way all that memory resident stuff is generally not loaded and it will probably go more smoothly...

Right click your C:\ drive in My Computer and see how much is used up and the amount of compression probably in the compression wizard.

You may need another harddrive or to delete a lot of stuff you don't use or even transfer to floppies or CD's.

More system specs would be nice.

I have another drive and has two volumes to it and I want to get rid of them. How do I unpartition the drive?

By Fdisking with a boot disk or with the manufacturers diagnostic disk.

I tried the FDISK but it dosen't see the drive or something it keeps listing the C: drive and not the D: drive which I want. The drive is old and I dont have any other disk that came for it but it is a maxtor and I saw some software they have on there web site but I dont want to start doing things I dont know how too.

Oh well

Thanks Matt H

Thanks I went ahead and downloaded maxblast3 from Maxtor and it was a breeze. Your advice really helped, thanks again.
