View Full Version : Dead CD-ROM?

Hi:

I have a CD-ROM that will not read any disks. If you click on the drive in explorer you get the message "Drive D not ready."

The BIOS detects the drive and it is seen by Win98. No red X's or anything in device manager. If you put a disk in it does not even try to read the disk.

I took a drive from another computer and installed it in this system and it worked fine. I'm thinking that this drive is dead as it will not work in any system I've installed it in.

Any ideas!

I wouldn't call the coroner yet..... I have had this kind of problem in the past and I think I ended up tracing it to problems with some utility software I had installed. I would check what you have running background and see if it will work with all but the basics turned off. You might also try the drive in another computer to see if it works...

Get a new drive... :)

Thanks Budfred and Ted:

I'm leaning toward a new drive at this point.

About the only thing I have not tried is to set the drive as the 1st boot device and then put a bootable disk in and see if it reads it. My guess is that it will not.

Budfred: I did try it in another machine without success.

Thanks again!

If you used the same IDE cable and the same power lead to connect the other CD-ROM drive, then yours is bad.
Replace it.

If you used it in another computer without success and used a different cable on it, then I agree. Time for last rites and shopping....

If you have an OfficeMax nearby (or can order by mail), they have a Cendyne CDRW for $20 after rebates this week (until Saturday). This drive has been very highly rated lately, so this is a good deal.
