I am having problems with my computer and when the pc boots up and begin to load the programs, etc. I get a box saying "Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry, windows will restart and repair." After I click ok it restarts but the message is there again. What can I do to fix this? Also when I access Real Player and IE I get a illegal operation. OS: Windows 98 SE CPU: Duron 750. Please help!

Hey Diz,
You might try booting to an MS-DOS prompt. Use a boot disk.
At the prompt, type:
Scanreg_/fix
Use a space in place of the underscore above. If that doesn't work, then try:
Scanreg_/restore
You should be presented with a listing of your most recent backups. Try to pick one that's dated before your problems started. However, I really think the "fix" option will do it.
Your illegal operations may be due to your registry problems. See if you can get the registry squared away using one of the above and post back if you're still having problems.

Woe is me.
Hi Blue,
I tried all of your suggestions and it said that a good registry has been put on the computer but I am still getting the error where it can't find alot of .dll files. Also on this pc I am getting errors when I try to use any program. I believe that the Windows 98 SE is corrupted. Can I just erase the hard drive and start over and reinstall Windows 98? This PC is new and I don't have anything really on it. At this point I just want it to work correctly. Please give me instruction how to erase a hard drive and format it to install Windows 98.

Yeah Diz. I'd erase your current partitions and start from scratch if I was you.
Chuck in a boot disk then
type
fdisk
delete your current partitions and then create a new one/s depending on your HD space etc.
then exit fidisk
type format c:
reinstall everything.
BTW you didn't get a virus did you? Your registry sounds totally screwed, I just fixed a system getting pretty simuiar stuff to you and a virus was the cause...
I ran virus scan and it didn't come up with anything but the thing is all messed up. I'll just erase the whole thing and start over....

Before reformatting and losing everything, write down the missing file names, and go to System Tools/System Information, click on Tools, System file checker, click on extract one file from installation disk, and restore the files one by one. This should (hopefully) repair it. At least worth a try....
