Hey everyone,

I have had this problem for awhile now, getting seriously discouraged. Next step, is buying a new sound card if no options work.
Here are the details ..the story

A friend of mine put a new sound card many years ago in my puter.
I do not know what brand, i do not have the drivers, everything worked fine until i had to reformat. Now i have no sound. I tested the speakers to make sure' they work fine

I have windows 98 SE. Computer is a clone
On the soundcard this is written: Wave Blaster, Sony/IDE S/N:626963
On the chip it says: DSP24 and 9616
WHen i look in device manager, this is what i have:

Under Sound, Video and Game controller:
1) Game port joystick (says: this device working properly)
2) MS Windows Sound system compatible (says device working properly)
3) Window Sound System Sound Blaster Emulation (says device working properly)

Under Other Devices:
1) AD-Chips Audio Controller (yello exclamation point)
This device is not working properly because the BIOS in the device is reporting ressources for the device incorrectly (code 9) Contact device manufacturer to get an updated BIOS for the device.
**I have 5 entries like this one (all same thing)

Now when i start my system, i get the following message:

System has detected new hardware : AD-Chips controller It asks me to look for the drivers for that (which i do not have), this appears 5 times. If i press cancel each time, afterwards, i get the following error message: Windows Sound system board is not responding properly. Run set up and reset your hardware configuration.

I have tried taking the card out, verifying volume, etc. All those things are ok.

I am not even sure what is an AD Chip controller ...

At this point, i have a feeling all the errors are connected because of the drivers missing.

Any thoughts, on a step by step method, to fix this

Thanks to everyone,

Eli

Hi,

I went to the site, but no drivers are available for waveblaster 1 or 2 :

The following files are available for your WaveBlaster II running under Windows 98 & 98 SE:
Driver files and software updates are currently not available for the product and operating system specified.

Any other sites,

thanks

Try a Google search with waveblaster drivers
You may find them elsewhere

hi again,

this is driving me nuts :(
I took out my sound card again, to try and find more accurate info.
I am gonna restart my method from the start, i wanna try and find the drivers for it correctly.
New Info:

The biggest chip has on it: AD CHIPS CMI8329A
On the side, i have 2 rows of 13 pins, just on the side it is written wave blaster. A bit furter on the sde, other pins with on the side Sony/IDE. I also a sticker with an S/N 626963

My sound card as my original post seems to be : Windows Sound System Sound Blaster Emulation.

I ran a query at driver guide with the AD CHIPS CMI8329a, got drivers , tried to install them for the audi chips, did not work, said did not find drivers.

My questions:

1) what is my sound card, is it Sound Blaster Emulation (which would be Creative Labs i think) as shown in my device manager or is AD Chips .

2) then what is AD CHIPS, seems to be a chipset on the sound card, but it appears in other devices in device manager

It seems i have the driver for the sound card but not for the AD CHIPS..

Cannot figure out for sure which type of sound card, there is FCCI number either..... and which drivers i need

If someone has the time, thanks

Eli

I hope you and all other reformatters learned a valuable lesson...

Get all your stuff figured out before you re-format while you still have device mangler working.

Pull out the disks and download the rest BEFORE you reformat and pull your hair out.

Good luck on your driver search.

Hear hear! Whyzmans post should have this problem solved, how ever if not, just make sure you have free IRQ available. The message from properties could also indicate windows is unable to find a free IRQ to assign to the card. Ive had some experience with this card and it can be a pain to install in Win98 or newer. If you still need free IRQ, disable com1 and com2 in your bios and it should fix you up.

Heres how to install the drivers:
1. unzip the file you DL'd to a folder like SCdrivers or something. you will need Winzip for this, google search for it.

Go to control panel, device manager, remove all devices found under sound, video and game controllers. Close Device Manager. Now go to add new hardware. next> next> no i want to select> sound, video and game controllers>next> have disk. now point it to the folder you unzipped to, next, it should list the .INF file in that folder and highlight it,Clicking next should begin the install, anytime it pops up and says cant find file ,point it back to that folder. You may also need your windows disk for the joystick file and you may have to point it to the win98 folder(or what ever version you are useing) on the cd.

After it should ask to reboot, if it doesnt then reboot anyway. there you go, should be done.

Just one addition...I'd do the "Removing" of the old drivers in SAFEMODE just to be sure you get all the drivers. Sometimes there are what we call "Ghost" drivers hanging around that don't show up in normal Windows! :)

"Beepin" Toms!!! It's not that my 'beep' is an error code with Windows,,, it's an edited post of an analogy of Windows ineptitude by remnants of software un-installs that don't 'quite' dissappear when should, nah, it's that I need to watch my language once in awhile. :o

Addition #2
Just my preferrenceClose Device Manager[insert here].Now go to add I have a time consuming habit of 'rebooting here', must be my Carpal Windows Syndrome... :D

Rebooting at this point often results in the old driver being installed when the device is detected, personally i prefer to tell windows what to do, not the other way around.
