In short:
During an internet session, my Presario 5461 rebooted and then stopped operating altogether. The power light is on, but he does not respond to pressing the soft power button.

In detail:
When I plug in the power cord, the power light comes on and the fan in the power supply starts spinning. The fan on the CPU is not spinning, there is a light burning inside the HD, but the HD busy light does not come on. I get nothing on my monitor. If I press the soft power switch, nothing happens. I can not get it to switch off either. The fan(s) are by far not as noisy as they used to be. After a minute or so the power drops out.

What I tried:
The Presario 5461 has a SFX style power supply. I measured the voltages on the MOLEX, all signals are there, except for the PS_ON on pin 14, also not when I press the soft power switch. I measured the switch, but that seems to be fine. I disconnected all periferrals, cleaned the interior and checked that all connectors and the CPU are properly seated. No results.

Is this a motherboard problem? Should the fan on the CPU (AMD K6-2 500 Mhz) rotate as soon as power is on?

maybe the fan went off and your CPU is completely gone. Change the fan and see if it works.

Yo Monkey,
Welcome to the forum and all, but, if I'm reading you rightly, you're probably gonna be an unhappy camper. I'm curious about your checking of the power supply. You sound like someone who probably knows a thing or two, so, maybe I'm wrong, but, yeah, the fan has to be spinning on the CPU. Even an old one'll fry pretty quick without a fan. And I think without your CPU you won't get a screen on the monitor. Nothing being sent to it, ya know? Ziba may (and probably does) know something that I don't but, I don't think, I'd bother with a new fan. I think we both think your CPU is a goner. Once a CPU is cooked a new fan won't help a bit. sorry. Just my take on it. Hopefully a couple more of the really smart guys will step up on this.
peace, and hang in there.
