I have recently built a computer and was wondering what the normal operating temperature of the cpu and motherboard should be. I have an ASUS A7V333-X/L with a 2000xp cpu installed. Also what are the added benefits, if any, to installing additional fans in the case if the temps are not excessive. All replies are greatly appreciated as I am trying to learn.
Sometimes the best answer is given by the manufacturer. (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_739,00.html) :)
Just make sure you have a good CPU HSF and adequate ventilation. An intake and exhaust fan are recommendable. Also, be sure that any wiring in the case is run neatly so as to not impede airflow.

I for one don't like to see CPU temps much more than low forties celsius for full load temperatures. Most of my systems run high thirties full load and mid-thirties for idle temps.
Except the new 1800+ system I just built using a lapped SK-7 w/58cfm 92mm LED fan on a GA-7VAXP Ultra. That puppy runs at 24-26C consistently, using Arctic Silvers' new Ceramique TIM. I highly recommend this stuff.
Anyways, anything below 50C is good for load temps, but the cooler you can get your system, the longer it will last. System temps should be no more than 10-12C over room ambient, if that. I like to see a smaller gap than that, and good case cooling by adding fans helps to achieve that.
Well...my CPU is registering 44°C under light load. It hits 55-56° when I stress it. I should probably get a better HSF (I have a cheap Antec on there now).
This is for a T-bird 1.4 running a 1.2 gHz. :\
