View Full Version : Unstable Connection to internet

I have a new Celeron 733 machine, 10GB Harddisk, 126MB Ram. For the first week it worked fine connecting to internet. After a week connection kept on being terminated after about 2 or 3 minutes, sometimes going up to about 5 minutes and disconnecting. I reformatted the hard disk, installed everything again. It worked fine. It is now roughly a week since I did that, the machine has been working fine untill today when it started the same problem.

When dialling the machine establishes connection without any problem. But the connection does not last longer than 5 minutes in most cases.

Would this machine happen to have a Conexant chipset winmodem?

What is the intial, logon speed?

Good point MJC. I had an Intel modem with the Conexant chipsetthat did the same thing. Computergeeks replaced it for me and, with the latest drivers I could find, the replacement modem worked fine. On another system I built, I had a spare Motorola SM (softmodem) that would connect, but then cause the computer screen to go blank, or I would receive a fatal exception error when trying to surf the web. I originally thought that the power supply might be the problem, but replaced it with a 300 watt Highpower ps - same problem. I am waiting for a new modem to be delivered, to see if the problem vanishes on the latter system. I have come to believe that soft modems are a problem. It will be interesting to see if either of these modems match what this gentleman's system is using. As you probably are aware, there is VERY limited support for these intel/Conexant chipset winmodems?

As stated on Conexant's page, they only make chipsets...so yes they have very little support, they say visit the manufacturer's site, and many manufacturers tend to think these software modems don't need much support. Beside using a good deal of the processors cycles to provide the conversions that make a modem a modem, they tend to much more susceptible to line noise and have a greater number of disconnects due to that reason. There are ways to help, one of which is to limit the connect speed, another is to make sure that you have the best possible line and that there is very little or nothing else connected to it, keep the drivers up to date, and of course replace it with a hardware modem.

Yes the Modem I use is an internal "Conexant softk56". Its maximum speed is 115200. But what suprises me is that after I had posted my problem, I kept on trying doing this and that. Until for no good reason I decided to change my display from True Colour 800 x 600 pixels to High Colour 800 x 600 pixels. After that the connection stabilised again. And incidentally I had just made the change to True colour and also reinstalled some sound applications and drivers when I started experiencing the problem, this is why it was not easy for me to realize that changing to True colour was the problem. It is just that I cannot recall if this is what I had done when I got the problem for the first time.

And mjc you have mentioned what you refered to as Hardware modems, what brand names are those, I would really like to use the modem that will allow me to use the highest resolution my computer can afford, I am not a technical person at all, all I have is curiosity when I use a computer.
