I have an HP Pavilion 6535 that displays the error message "Operating system not found." I have tried to use the recover cd, but that doesn't help. I think the problem lies in the mother board. How can I troubleshoot this problem? Is there an easy way to check the mother board? Help. Thank You

Hi there, this place is full of very switched on ppl who will have you up and running in no time, but yoou need to provide a bit more detail before they can get to work on the problem. First and most importantly has the system EVER worked? have you done anything different (added software/hardware) before the error occured? Memory? Operating System? Power Supply? Suffered any power failures/spikes? If using windoze, can you start in safe mode....etc.etc...

From my limited experience you need to post as much detail as possible to get the best cross section of possible cures.

Actually the system belongs to my daughter. She purchased on 09-09-00.
It was hooked up and running fine. About 3 or 4 months ago, she moved. When she hooked the system back up, she got the error message. I brought it home a few nights ago and started to look into it. I called HP Tech Support and they wanted $25.00 for a "walkthru". THe system is under warranty until 09-09-01. But HP just gives the run-a-round. I swapped IDE Cables at mother board as instructed. Tech Support has informed me the trouble is in the mother board. I am able to start system recovery, but it aborts soon after giving the same error message. Everything worked fine until the move, so something is broken or loose. But what???? Thank you

it does sound like something was 'shifted', or grounded out while moving this machine around.

I would strongly urge you to call back the tech support and get them to address this BEFORE your warranty runs out.

here's some TIPS on how to be successfull with tech Support:

Even if you have a WORLD CLASS IDIOT online, be polite. getting upset with someone who thinks that they know what they're doing will only cause animousity and get you nowhere.

It may take you several calls to get a Techie that actually knows anything except the script that they have in front of them.

When you get a good one-(tech), ask if the situation can be ESCALATED, due to the fact that Tech Support seems to indicate that it is a MB problem (hence- it is a hardware problem- and their warranty is covering that)

but the main thing is- you do not have allot of time left.

get them to fix/replace whatever is wrong NOW.

A common solution that HP uses is to swap the entire machine...you have less than 1 month left so tell them that you want to exercise that option. The best thing would be to dig out the documentation that came with the machine (should have the warranty info), and demand that they follow up on what the warranty says that they are responsible for....

And don't let them talk you into trying a bunch of different troubleshooting options and make you go over your warranty period. There's some tech support that's good at that. If that might be the case, then you have to get firm and let them know you want it switched like others here have suggested before your warranty runs out.

Hey, Thanks alot guys. This is really a very informative site. However,
since I AM a Computer Dummy,I took the system to Best Buy to initiate the
warranty repair procedure. THere was no hassle and the system should be back and as good as new within seven days. (According to Joe, the service guy) Thanks again. I'll be backkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If the system was moved, it could very well be head damage to the hard drive. Even the smallest jar to the hard drive could cause damage. It'll be interesting to see what the problem really is though.

Hi;

I would be interested in seeing what the tech. says was the problem also. Have him explain what happened to you and post the results.

Remember when you used to be able to "park" the hard drive before moving a system?

Hey Postcode!
