Anyone got any ideas why an old Epson 600 stylus colour inkjet printer just won't print in colour? I've tried everything, with one computer on W98 the laptop on XP Home. Fine on Black and white, but colour, zero. I've cleaned the heads, replaced the cartridge. This printer has never once printed out a colour in its life...

It sounds like the color setup in the printer was probably bad from the beginning. If it is new, I would take it back...

Sorry..really stupid questions, but you did check and make sure the tape was off the bottom of the color cartridge? And you checked through whatever Printer Properties box there may be for a color setting? And it's not stuck on "Draft" printing for default, right? When you want it to print color, it's printing the job in black..?..or not printing at all? Are you using a driver from Epson, or the generic ones in 98 and (find this hard to believe) XP?

Kay, thanks for your post - yes, everything been checked and checked again. The drivers are the XP ones as Epson haven't got any upgrades/downloads on their site  The W98 are the Epson drivers that came with the printer so... wake up epson...!!!

Bit of a bummer, that. So guess Budfred is right..printer defective to start with? But, guess you can keep it for someone who only needs to print in black? Old grayscale pics, and web page text...:) We have a friend who uses an old HP..will do color, but only if you change the cartridge..and she just uses the black usually to print out letters and such.
You shouldn't need the epson the driver disk, as windows home should have default epson drivers for that printer.
If you add a new printer through the windows xp add printer wizard, the printer should be under "Epson - Epson Stylus Colour 600 ESC/P2", this is all you would need. Unless of course you are one of those people who feel a need to install the status monitor software.
It sounds like the print heads are blocked on the printer, you could try cleaning them with the epson cleaning routines.
