View Full Version : Best Choice (19" Monitor) Revisited

Recently upgraded my PC to a Dell 8250; & convinced myself to go with an 1900FP 19" LCD, which I've never liked (I do a good deal of photo editing, graphic illustrations & some web design; & haven't been satisfied with the sharpness & color.) (Dell is supposed to send me a Raedon 9000Pro card with DVI, but I've heard that digital may not improve the performance by astronomical leaps & bounds...so I think it's back to CRT land, for me

Have a chance to swap to a 19" CRT; & have narrowed the choices down to the following monitors. Would appreciate some input:

Dell M992 - 1600 X 1200 Pixels, .243mm Dot Pitch

ViewSonic G90fb - 1600 x 1200 Pixels, 0.25 mm Dot Pitch

ViewSonic P95f+B - 2048x1536 Pixels, 0.25 mm Aperture Grille Pitch

ViewSonic E90fb - 1600 x 1200 pixels, 0.21 mm Dot Pitch

NEC/Mitsubishi DP930SB-BK Diamond Pro 930SB - 1920 x 1440 Pixels, 0.24 mm Dot Pitch

NEC/Mitsubishi DP930SB-BK-SV 930SB - 1920 x 1440 Pixels, 0.24 mm Dot Pitch

The E90fb is cheaper than the other ViewSonics; & at .21 Dot Pitch, I have no idea why. The DP9030SB-BK-SV 930SB is $475 more than all the others, I imagine because of the hefty res, but I'm not crazy about the visor thing.

Also: Is native resolution as much of a factor for CRT's as it is with LCD's. I prefer to run at 1024 X 768; & the Dell M992 has factory preset res modes (with a 1024 X 768 @85 Hz preset.) How exactly do preset resolution modes work; & would I get sharper detail with that monitor (set at that mode), than I would with a monitor that has a higher native res?

Thanks much,

Have no idea, really, on the technical stuff. I perused all the various options at ViewSonic, got confused, but thought I wanted the "G" option..lol..and then, of course, could not find it being sold anywhere in Albuquerque. And having a monitor shipped to you can cost big time..so one way to narrow your choices down is to find out what is actually available to you in your local stores. We went to the big city, checked out some monitor displays..found a Philips that looked good to me. I resisted temptation, and came home and "researched" the Philips online..supposedly a good monitor according to reviews..AND then went back and bought it. Had a rebate that we actually received which was nice too.

Agree on the LCD. I have never seen one that I wanted..and truthfully, it gives me the willies sometimes wondering what some of my jpegs look like if the recipient has an LCD.

I am a fan of LCDs for a number of reasons, so I can't suggests an alternative, but I had to chime in to defend them. I have 2 at home and find them far superior to the CRT I have at work. I would much rather do graphics work on one than on a CRT. I have a friend who does big time web design and I believe that is all they use at their office now...

I'm with Bud on this, Jpg's look just the same if not better. Dvd's look better, only high action games can you see a slight blur. By the way the Dell Lcd 19 inch is really a rebranded Samsung which always gets the best reviews. I also like the complete screen being filled, no black boarders. Anyway you should go look at what your choice is to make sure it looks good to your eyes [which of course is the most important consideration]

Man...I went to CompUSA tonight to compare the two (LCD's & CRT's); & I'm even more confused now.

The blur was visible on action games (on the LCD's...which I also don't really play a great deal of), but looking close at the sharpness & detail on both, the text on the CRT's looked jagged/pixeled. Funny thing is, I'm veiwing the text as I type this message to you guys (on my LCD); & it does look more "realistic", in that the fonts are more rounded...less linear & aliased. But at the same time, there seems to be a haze, or a slight blurriness to the words.

Let me ask you guys this:

Is the sharpness & clarity better on an LCD with DVI, than it is with analog?

Thanks,

I don't think that DVI makes that much of a difference from what I have heard. I have analog monitors and the text is very crisp. It may just be your monitor or you may not have it set properly for the resolution and refresh rates of the monitor...

If you get the right lcd dvi won't make much difference. Make sure it is at least 400,500 to 1 contrast and at least 160 degree viewing angle [which means you will be able to see at almost 90 degree angle to side] Also in the store they might not have clear type turned on, makes a big difference with lcd print
I gave all my crt's away. I am fortunate in the fact that price was not an issue, that would be the only reason I would even look at a crt
This just my opinion.
Mark:) :)
Also on a good lcd you can change resolution with no problem. Refresh is really not an issue as they do work the same way as crt. What I mean is there is no flicker or actual refreshing goin on.:)
