I'm trying to defrag my C drive but it won't defrag. It goes up to 10% and then just stop there.
I know that you must scandisk before you defrag but when I do a scan disk it keep switching between "file allocation tables" and "folders" so scandisk can't be complete. After it does that for about ten times then I get an error message saying that something is writing to my drive C but I close all the other apps except explorer and systray.
Could someone help me please?:(
Thanx!!!;)

Have you turned off your Screen-saver?
Also, here's some info you might want to have a look at:
http://www.idf50.co.uk/dm20.htm
You can also run it from SAFEMODE....
Try running scandisk from the Command prompt
allow it to repair problems and move files from bad sectors

Command prompt will still load your background programs. These are what are probably stopping scan disk and defrag from completing. Try booting into safe mode, then turn off your screen saver, then run scandisk, then defrag.

Ok thanx every one for posting. I've successfully defrag in safemode. I have a question though. If I partition my hd into smaller ones then I can defrag easier right?

Not really. The various steps and conditions still apply. But it does go faster on a smaller drive or partition.

Hehe...I like that Steve!
The difference between "easier" and "faster!"
Set up time being equal...if you've patitioned a 120 Gig Harddrive into to 60s and you've music files or photos on one of the partitions and data on the other...chances are you'd seldom have to defrag the music/photo files so you'd be able to just defrag the data 60 which would go faster than a full 120...;)

I have had the same problem. I have my hard drive partitioned into 8 drives. The only one that defrag has a problem with is the c:\ drive which is where the os is. I worked around it by turning off all disk optimizing and virus checking type programs that were running and was able to do it in normal mode as well as safe mode.
