I really hope that someone can help me before I drop kick my computer across the office floor!!
My problem is it keeps telling me I'm out of memory. It can't be I have 256Ram in the thing right now and can add more if needed.(but why!?)
What seems to happen is that every time I open a program the memory stays locked up after I close the program. This is especially bad when I'm on the net.

Here are the details on my system
OPS Windows 98
CPU 266 Pentium II w/ 440BX motherboard
RAM 256 PC/133 SDRAM
HD 27GB Western Digital
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi and Welcome,

Did this problem just start or has it been going on for a long time?

Memory leaks are a common problem with 98. You might try upgrading to 98SE. Or, if you can, peruse the net for some free RAM optimizers. They will help in releasing the RAM after you close a program. I used MemoKit, which worked fabuously, but I paid for it. There are loads of freeware and shareware that might help you out.

Another important thing to consider is how full your harddrive is. However, since you have a 27gigger, I doubt that's the problem.

Hang tight for some more opinions. In the meantime, do a search on your error message and see what comes up.

Good luck.

Hi;

Only other thing I can think of is;

Does the total amount of ram show at post?

Have you added ram recently? Is it the same brand and type and capacity?

What brand and model motherboard is this?

Does the error message happen with all programs you try to run, or a specific one?

bubbles-- Please run a virus-scan and see if you don't have a worm type virus doing the deed to your RAM. Luck.

This seems to be a common problem for some reason AND there are multiple causes/solutions. The first thing I would do is do a "CONTROL-ALT-DELETE" and a dialog box will come up showing how many programs you have running in the "background" I myself have 8 and that is probaly a little too many.If you have 10 or more.......that couls be part of your problem. The next thing to do is click on start/run type in msconfig then click the starup tab on the box that comes up. You can uncheck each of the items that you think you dont need in the background. YOU ARE NOT DELETING THEM......you are just not loading them at start up. You can always go back and put the check mark on if needed.

Second thing is that I would clean out your temp files AND your temporary internet files. These can be found at start/find/files or folders.......type in temp. Then click on the temp or temp internet files as desired highlight the files then delete them.

Last thing, and I know that I may get some grief on this is to delete any "Cookies" in your cookie folder AND turn off your cookies. Since I don't know what browser you use, I will hope that somebody else will help you with that. It has been my experence that 'Cookies" have made my machine slow and cumbersome, but that goes away after I delete my cookies!
I dont understand since they are suppose to be text files.......but who can really say?

Steve - I was fascinated to read about checking on programmes running in the background, and would dearly like to reduce the nine running in my background. Would it be safe to uncheck these? (I have no idea what they are): Wpspsw - Alogserv - Rnaapp.
OS: Window 98SE

Hi,

Here are the programs running in my background. (Win 98 SE)

Bardon Back Orifice Eliminator......This is kinda like a firewall
Explorer........The browser (I think)
ICQ..........Internet Chat
Netdde......My Norton system(I think)
Poproxy.....I think that has something to do with my ISP
Navapw32......Beats me!!
Systray......The system tray
Ddeproc.....Beats me

So as you can see, I dont have what you are running in the background and my system seems ok. My guess is that you could probably uncheck the ones that you mentioned. Another site that may be helpful to you is www.jefflevy.com.......click (http://www.jefflevy.com.......click) on the "Learn Button" There are over 150 lessons. You might ant to brouse through them ......they are listed by topic.........and a couple of them talk about msconfig and programs running in the background.

Here (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm)is a list of programs and their abbreviations that can be unchecked, or not, at StartUp.
