Ok, I'm friggin stumped, dual P2 266 system, Gateway...ran fine this afternoon w/4 32mb dimms in it...take out old memory, put in 2 128mb modules...no boot, no display, no beeps, I can hear the hd spin up, the cdtray will open and close, and the on/busy light on the cdrom stays on constantly...
Tried different memory configs including 4 128 dimms, 1 32...every possible you can think of...
The only thing I have in it now is a video card, hd and cdrom, have tried an agp and pci, have tried unplugging the hd...every time, the same thing happens, it turns on, but doesn't do anything...
The only thing I can think of now is a bad ground...any other ideas?
Thanks...

When all else fails, read the instructions.
Ok. you popped out some old mem put in some new and now ...zip, nada, nothing?
Have triple checked that you didn't knock anything else loose when you switched them?
Have you checked to make sure that you haven't pinched a wire somewhere and now have a short?
Check and make sure both processors are still firmly seated?

Both cpus are good...they're bolted down, literally...
The cable routing in this system is a nightmare, so a cable could be pinched or damaged....
I'm gonna get a hammer out soon though and it all won't matter...

Well, having taken the mobo out and tried it with just cpus, video and memory, it does the same thing...
I know the speaker works, cause I get the beep code if I try to boot with no ram installed...

H.G... There must be a memory slot that has a problem. I may have been misled somewhere but while setting up an Intel 0R-840 w/dual 600's, things wouldn't hum unless all the memory slots were either filled w/a stick of memory or a terminator card. Realize you have tried every possible combination but can you tell if there is a problem with a slot itself? Don't give up the Ghost. (This OR-840 would only accept RDRAM)
Also, as I recall, the P2 dual units used a VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) for CPU purposes. You may look into that as the problem. Luck.

Unplug the memory chips and reseat them about a half dozen times. If it's even close to the problem I had when switching to DIMM memory in this board, the slots have never been used, and have accumulated a coating of dust, grease, smoke residue etc. I had to reseat the chip in this one 8 times before it would POST. Once it did get good contact, it never looked back...I can even use SIMM chips at the same time with this board, but took them out for troubleshooting, and never put them back in. (Turned out to be video drivers.)

Until yesterday it had 4 dimms in it, that's all it takes...I think the problem may be diagnosed, albeit not fixed, you ever try to buy ECC ram on a sunday? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I have tried reseating the memory several times, I think the problem is the type of Ram, near as I can figure, and ranchdog said the same, the board only takes ECC, so until I can get some, I'm SOL...
I appreciate all the help....

I had the same exact problem and it drove me crazy to.
It's the worst when you can't even get into the bios.
It turned out to be the power switch and I had to buy another case.
You can use another system to see just plug the power button cable to the motherboard in the system that doesn't work.
