I have a new IDE cd rom put in my computer as the old cd rom stopped working (it plugged into the sound card).I installed a new driver and the cd rom works well, I also deleted the old cd-rom from the list in the Device Manager. When I boot up every time it says "cd-rom drive not ready, set or turn on and I hit "a" for "abort" and it boots up and the cd rom works a treat. How do I fix the error on boot-up?
Thanks for any help in advance!

djmz... Give this a shot. Go back to Device Manager and remove the CD-ROM now listed. Shut down and then re-boot. On the re-start let Windoz recognize the new hardware (CD-ROM) and you should be back in business. Luck.

Check autoexec.bat for references to the old CD ROM. The units that plug into the sound card are Panasonic or Sony interface, and usually have to be loaded in DOS first, by commands in autoexec.bat or config.sys. Place a rem statement before any lines referring to MSCDEX, with a space behind it.

rem_Device=MSCDEX etc is an example. Check config.sys too, it might also have entries there. The underscore used here denotes the space.

I fixed the problem (with help from the answers) by going to the "step by step" process at the F8 command on bootup and finding the old cd rom driver still there (along with the new one) and deleted it, now boots up fine!
Thanks again.
