I'm not sure if this belongs here or not so please move it if you need too to where ever it belongs.
I just had a real eye opener from logitech of all people. I own several of their products, keyboards, track balls, and a little camera. I have always trusted them and never had any trouble with any of their products. Well, I just did a 42 meg. download of the new image studio for my little camera and it plainly states on the web site that there are no third party apps in it. That's not true. It not only gave me the studio but a desktop manager. I thought nothing about it as I've always trusted them but I just ran my spybot and it found 58 instances of something called Back Web Lite on my computer!!! I was appalled when I found that it was Logitech that had put it there:eek: I removed it and I just got through writing to Logitech and telling them how low they were and that they had surely lost a customer for good. So, be careful! If they are stooping that low then who knows what they may do next and I want nothing to do with them. Take care all, LG;)

Interesting LG! I suppose I should have posted that Logitech's cordless mouse software put some(I think it was) Weatherbug crap on my computer too....(Way back when).

The nerve huh? :p

I believe Logitech has installed BackWeb stuff on my computer a few times too, but I have just deleted it. I trust their products to some degree, but I don't trust anybody's software without a lot of support from people I trust, like the PCGuide denizens....:)

I would strongly suggest you install a trojan hunter as well. I use Swat it and swear by it. There is a free version at the following link. just remember to check for updated files every week or so.

http://www.swatit.org/download.html

I have installed Logitec camera and software onto 3 computers. Then run Swat it and each time it found a trojan, linked to the Desktop messenger, from Logitec as well as all there Backweb stuff.

When found just delete it all. Program runs just fine with all of there spyware and phone home rubbish. I have previously removed Logitec desktop messenger to see if the trojan went as well. On my test machine it stayed put even though messenger was gone.

Backweb is not a trojan...it can be spyware.

It is used by some companies to "push" driver updates, which is one of the uses Logitech uses it for, another is keeping the "extra" buttons on the keyboards upto date (provided you leave them at the factory default pages).

It can also be used to update banner ads, even transmit data back to the party that bundled it.

Over all for most items it is NOT needed (although F-secure uses it for AV updates and it is required unless you opt for manual updates). It is blatant foistware that uses a portion of your bandwitdth for a purpose oother than your personal use.

HP uses backweb for specific updates to your box , has worked real well for me and prevented some issues with sp1 at the time
So even though it is spy-ware it can be useful.

Just a note Jabar, living in the lightening capital of the universe weatherbug which seems to have cameras everywhere [scary music in the background] has really helped us with when and where the storms were going to hit.
So even though people say it is spy-ware it has really helped.
See ya in the sky:D :D :D

when I installed the Logitec camera I found the backweb stuff PLUS a trojan on each installation.

BudFred-You know what Reagan used to say "Trust, but verify" :D

I was recently given a very nice Fuji 3800 digital camera. Great camera, but the software that came with was loaded with crap peddling nonsense (came with a weak photo manipulating application which had a perpetual window to one side with "informative offers" for things like photo printing) never found any spyware though. I deleted the whole mess immediately & just use the Fuji USB driver so I can open the files in Photoshop.

I think I’ll check out that trojan program Ernie mentioned, I would have assumed Norton would catch such junk, but it never hurts to be sure.
