View Full Version : System freezes at different points during bootup

I bought a new MB (M810LMR with a SiS730(?) chipset) with an AMD Duron 800 and 256MB RAM. I moved the floppy, HD, and CDROM drive from my old system to the new. I think that I have the correct jumper settings for CMOS memory and Disable Keyboard. I also have a new case.

When I first turned the system ON, I got a "CMOS Battery Low" error message as well as "Incorrect memory setting in CMOS". I was unable to get to the CMOS settings. After several restarts with varying lengths of time beween restarts, the situation is this -- I don't get the original messages any more, but my system freezes at different stages of the boot-up. The farthest I have been able to get is to the initial Windows screen. I am not sure of this, but I *think* that the system goes further before freezing the longer I have the system Off. So, if I turn the ystem off and back again right away, I may not even get past the "Hit Del to enter CMOS" message before things freeze up.

Other problems:
(a) I need to turn the power switch at the back of the case off to power down, the soft power switch is ignored (although I need to use it to power the system On).
(b) I cannot get to the BIOS setting by hitting the "Del" key as instructed. My keyboard comands are ignored. Early on, I did get it to work once (but could not change settings once I was in), but not any more.
(c) The system powers down on its own after a while.

I tried clearing CMOS memory, but that puts me back to square one -- CMOS battery low and memory incompatible messages.

Help!

Welcome adiabatic.... Will this system boot-up in Safe Mode? I keep thinking there is a CPU/HSF issue here as well. Do you have another CMOS battery you could try? It's best to do a clean intstall of the O/S after replacing the Mboard. Can you boot to a Start-up disk (floppy)? Get back when you can. Luck.

......Indecision may or may not be my problem......

ranchdog:

Thanks for the response. No, I cannot boot up in Safe mode. Either the computer freezes before it gets that far, or when it does, it ignores my keyboard input.

One other observation -- if I turn my computer off and turn it back on immediately, it doesn't even POST. I have to turn my system off for a while. since the fan is running, I don't think that this is an overheat problem.

Any other ideas?
