View Full Version : Can't Boot

I did some cleanup on my HD in my Compaq LTE 5280, and inadvertently
removed an entry needed to boot. When I clicked on restart I now get a
message "invalid system disc".
I acquired this portable fully loaded but no discs of any kind. I did try
to create a startup disc but was unable to do so when asked to "insert
WIN98 CD-Rom". I do not have one.
I do know that the version number of the 98SE in my laptop, is different
from the version number in my desktop. One was released in 1999, one in
2000 via OEM installation by Compaq, in my desktop. I do have a startup
disc for my desktop.
Can I use the startup from my desktop OEM 98SE, to boot my laptop, and do
a SYS C: to restore my HD in the laptop, to boot, and put it back in operational condition?
I posted this screw up I did, in "How Do I", and received an answer as to
what I did, but no help to fix it.
Can anyone help here.?

As far as I know you should be able to use a win98 Start Up disk made from any other win98 machine without problems. I use win 98 Start Up disks to install win95, no problem. It should handle the sys operation just fine.

After you get it to boot, run the system file checker and make sure all the rest of the system files are in good shape.
