None of my cdr/dvd drives work. I just made a new computer and they worked up until about 2 weeks ago. All of the sudden they just stopped working. The error message I get when I investigate says that windows couldn't download the driver, but I thought it didn't need one in windows. I don't think it has anything to do with the settings to "slave" or "master" because I tried just having one drive installed and it still doesn't work. Any ideas. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Snapps

Hello Snapps,
Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
How are the drives normally set up on your system? On which IDE and in what positions (i.e, Primary or Secondary? As Master or Slave?).
In the meantime, I would suggest taking one of the drives and place it on the Secondary IDE as Master. In which case be sure the jumpers are set appropriately and be sure to terminate (i.e., place the drive on the end of the IDE cable).
Be sure that your BIOS is set to AUTO DETECT

If they were detected before and now 2 weeks later they are not,
PLEASE CHECK THE IDE CABLES AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE SNUGLY ATTACHED. This is the most common cause of this type of problem when people bring things to me to fix.
Rtye the easiest thing fisrt. If they are NOT being detected by the bios, I would try to re-seat the IDE cable and then try a new IDE cable before I would try anything else.
I had a computer shipped to a customer for a chistmas present and I got a frantic phone call xmas eve about hard drive problem. It turns out it was a drive cable that came loose during shipping
