System: 900mhz AMD Duron, Socket A sis 730s 200mhz main board (mattsonic)
Issue: After installing hard drive from old system onto this system
I received the error that NTLDR is missing. The hard drive has Window's 2000 on it. Please advise as to the nature of this error.
Thanks a whole heck of a lot.

Is there a disk in the floppy?

There is no floppy connected at this time. Just trying
to get it to boot. Thanks though

You don't say why you are doing the swap around. Is it possible you had a virus on the old system you were using with this hdd? I ask because when you boot the MBR starts the NTLDR program and if it is corrupt or infected it may not be able to read the boot.ini file and load win2k, therefore the error you are getting.

HDD worked fine in an AMD K62 350mhz w/ and amptron MB. Can you tell me what the NTLDR is? What exactly is it missing?

You still didn't answer the questions from the last post completly! It is the file that loads your OS be it winnt or win2k. POST looks for the MBR and the MBR must have this file.

Hey bud,
try the site below. Might give you enough answers to problem solve. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q255/2/20.asp

Nice work nimnorf2! It always amazes me when MS actually admits to something as a "known problem" meaning they don't know how to hell to fix it.! Finding these gems is not always easy.

Great Info!
But.......The drive worked great in my old system and never had a boot issue. Could this have occurred "in transit"? I'll try the HD again in
the old system to confirm it's ok.

Here's another MS link (http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/techinfo/reskit/en/Core/fnbb_str_hrhh.htm). Were both machines set up with a single hard drive, running off of the motherboard controller?

You could also go thru the install process again. Only this time choose the option to repair a Windows 2000 installation by pressing "R". At that point you'll get the option to repair the current installation using the Emergency Repair process. Press "R" agian and then choose the "manaul repair option". Now choose the option "inspect startup enviroment" this option will replace a missing NTLDR from the CD.
Could this have occurred "in transit"? Only if you changed the disk parameters in the bios
Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I tried this process and it did find a some files to be repaired. But after doing this I still received the "NTLDR missing" upon boot up.........As stated earlier this drive works fine in other machines .........Is it possible that the paramaters in the bios on the new machine need to be set manually to match the drive. It's set on automatic now.
Thanks

I would try setting the Hard drive parameters by hand first. If that doesn't work try on of these 3 options.
First
Retry the repair option but this time choose "inspect the boot sector."
Second
Place your hard drive back into a computer that boots from it. Once your in Windows 2000 format a floopy and then copy these 3 files from your hard drive to that floopy.
NTLDR
NTDETECT
BOOT.INI
Now place the drive back in the computer that gives the error and use the floopy to boot Win2k. Once its up copy the NTLDR file from the floopy to the hard drive. Reboot without the floopy to test. ( you'll have to change some file attributes in order to see and copy those files. I'll assume you know how to do this from within Win2k)
Last
If that fails to work then perform an in-place upgrade of Win2k by starting the install process for Win2k and when asked "to repair an existing Windows 2000 installation" choose "yes". This last option may cause some settings to be lost.
Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Darn!!! I can't think up a witty come-back.
Oh well...I knew one day I would make some error and someone would pounce before I could edit it. I've got to learn to type faster http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey! You guys rock! I appreciate all the great advice....
Unfortunatley no matter what I did I couldn't get the thing
to work.
So, After backing up all my files I broke down and wiped the thing clean and re-installed, I had to get the machine going......Now it's up an running.
Thanks Again
