I have just assembled this computer.(Celeron 533) I tried loading on Win Me and it loaded fine but would not recognize the CD ROM as it was running in the compatibility mode paging state. I re formatted the HD using a disk manager program from Maxtor (computer has a Maxtor HD)and loaded Win 98SE this time , but the same problem. What is going wrong?? What I did notice though, in the device manager, the Primary & secondary IDE Controllers both have yellow exclamation marks and the one below this " VIA Bus master PCI IDE controller" seems okay. But the resource tab for this shows that this VIA... is using two IRQ's 14 & 15. Is this normal or am I just imagining things? Thanks ahead of time for your help.
P.S. The VIA bus master is the parent controller for the primary & secondary controllers

Your Via chipset requires a driver .
These are installed using the Via4in1 install program.
It should be on the cd that came with your mother board.

The use of IRQ 14 and 15 for the hard drive controller is normal.

Check your config.sys and autoexec.bat files for commands enabling your cdrom drive.
If they are in there. Just REM them out. For example.
REM DEVICE=C:\SCSI\ASPI8DOS.SYS /D
and or REM c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe /

Using win98 you should use the run button on the start menu and enter MSCONFIG
this program will allow you to edit the files without causing errors.

It only requires you to remove the check mark from the box next to each command line to disable that command.
Win98 will make the command line changes for you.

Thanks Rick for the advice. I shall try this right away.I do have the disk for the motherboard, but am unable to use it as the computer does not show up in "My Computer". I will have to download this off the net and maybe load it on with floppies.
