I am working on a pc that works well. I just reloaded Windows 98 and it seems to work very well when it is on......
When "off" the customer said it makes a grinding noise for awhile every once in a while. I didn't believe him so I had it for a couple of days and sure enough, when off I noticed the noise too. I took the cover off and watched it and quite often the power supply fan will turn on very low and the hard drives start to spin, then after about 15 seconds it will stop.
I checked the power supply and all voltages seem to be fine. I'm thinking it is the motherboards power up switch (just guessing), does anyone have any ideas.
Thanks

One other possibility is the BIOS settings for "wake on ring", and "wake on LAN". Are either of these enabled?
Otherwise,is the mains supply "noisy", or via a surge arrestor/UPS?

Make sure no mobo pins are shorting together touching the cabinet or whatever. Take look at the mobo's CMOS battery chamber, see you don't have short circuit there.
