I have an Intel CPU desktop computer that is not working. I tried to add RAM and when I closed the box back up the computer wouldn't even POST nor would the main HDD spin. Its an IBM Activa.

Nothing on the display either.

The power supply activates and the HD LED shows but thats all. The monitor LED is active too. Running WIN 98.

Thank you

Get in that case again man. Give that ram a extra hard push down. Put a little more muscle into that ram and see what happens.Betcha it will boot then. IS the ram the same speeds pc100,pc66,pc133.If not that could be the problem.

System WONT boot even with original existing RAM! Not concerned now about adding NEW RAM as much as I want the box to boot in the first place.

When you replaced the RAM you may have knocked something else loose...try reseating ALL the internal connections.

Also, did the RAM sticks firmly lock into place? are the hold downs engaged?

You may have to clear the CMOS on this one.

Remove the little round battery on the motherboard, usually the size of a quarter, with the markings something like, "Sony CR 2032". Leave it out for a few minutes. Check all connections as suggested above. Replace battery and boot.

Let us know what happens.

Ok, we now have a big problem.

My first guess is something got fried from ESD. Any takers on this one?

Hang in there, Inquiring. The day is just starting out. Others will be around soon. If we can get a consensus, we can advise further.

A couple things you can try. First, hold down the Del key and then power the system on. You may also try pressing the Insert key down if the Delete key dosen't do the trick. Also, try pressing and holding down the power button after you have applied power. The system may be in a sleep state. In addition, simple keystroke or mouse movements may wake the system up. I think I'm jumping into this late here, but those IBM's like to sleep all the time.

Another option is to pull and leave outa ll the other cards...like the modem and sound card, etc.. and leave just the CPU, memory, and video. Disconnect ALL other devices to include the IDE devices and floppy. Then, if things work, attach each device and power up after each device is installed. You might be able to locate a trouble spot this way.

One other thing. Try to boot the system without the memory installed. Sounds dumb, but you should get some beeping to complain about no memory. This should tell us is the CPU is workign or not. Hope this helps.
