I installed a new modem today and each time I try to logon to the internet I get a "no dial tone detected" message. I have to unplug and then plug in the phone line into the modem jack each time. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am using the same phone wire that I have always used with no previous problems.

Double check that the line is plugged into the correct jack...not the one labled PHONE (on the modem).

Bad modem, if nothing else works, like driver reinstall, after making sure the drivers for old one are gone, return it.

What kind of modem is it? And I assume you mean the modem works after you disconnect and reconnect the phone line? Just for thoroughness, you might check Control Panel...Modems...General page..Dial Up Settings. Make sure those are right, and make sure you're set on "tone" and not "pulse" because I got error messages of no dial tone when, for whatever weird reason, it was set on pulse. Same place, Diagnostics tab, highlight modem, and click on More Info. Is it reporting the modem working properly there?

It just seems odd (unless I am misunderstanding your original post) that the modem works after you disconnect and reconnect...might be something as simple as a bad plug end. When I was working on new build, it was across the room from phone jack, and I would have to plug in every time...and several times, I didn't get the plug all the way, and "clicked" into the wall. Do you have another phone cord you could use..just to check?

In Windows 98, go to:
“Start>Help” and in the Index type “Trouble”.
You will see a list displayed, headed “Troubleshooting” and below it “Modems”.
“Choose” this [“Select” + “Display”].
Give it the info it asks for and follow its advice.

You could also try putting a couple of commas in front of the number to be dialed. Like this: ,,,555-1234

The commas just tell dial up networking to wait a second before moving on to whatever's next. More commas, more delay. Maybe that will give the dial tone enough time to come through before the modem gives up.

I was having the same trouble with Donnie's computer. It turned out that his modem is very sensitive and if we had voice mail that needed to be checked his modem would report no dial tone. After we checked the voice mail and got rid of the beeping tones his modem worked fine. If you have call waiting you might also check to see if the *70 is in front of your dial up number. Hope you get if fixed. LG;)
