hi to all, I have a problem with a PC I have built for my brother, it will connect fine to the net at my home but at his place, it wont connect at all, he has checked his line with a laptop and that connects ok, he has a PC upstairs for work connected to his works network, but this new one I have built is downstairs on an ordinary line, I have disabled LAN in the bios as I dont think he needs it? Question is why should it work at my home and not his, we are both with the same telecom company, this is only my second home build, and everything works great apart from this, greatly appreciate any help.

What else is different?

Are you using the same ISP?

Have you made the adjustments for his ISP?

Have you tried a new cable between the modem and the jack?

I have tried 2 new cables, I have heard that if my brother has call waiting on his phone this could affct the modem??

Call waiting usually only affects you after a connection is established...it can unceremoniusly dump you from the internet when a call comes in.

I would try running through the connection wizard and setting a up a new connection.

I came up against a problem the other day. Friend called unable to connect new computer to net. So over charge this knight in shining armour. (Might be handy info for someone in the future)

Tried every thing, eventually after two hours I phoned Freeserve to check password and settings. He checked every thing with me - all ok. Still no connection. Phoned back to Freeserve. He asked for the phone number I was calling from. Gave it to him, and friends son piped up saying I was wrong they have two lines into house. One for calls one for net. The modem was connected to wrong phone socket.

It turns out that some ISP's tie your connection to a specific telephone number. Could this be your problem? Try using pay as you go number to see if you can connect.

just in from work, funnily enough my brother is with freeserve, he's not in yet so will have to wait, but I cannot connect using the wizard which uses a free 0800 number, the 0800 worked at my place but not his, hmmm confusing.

That was one of the problems I kept running up against. I used my old Freeserve 0845 account & number (I keep it active just for testing purposes at home and elsewhere) and could connect without problems, which needless to say just confused me even more:rolleyes:

Try using someones 0845 account details & number (You will need their password and user name to do so)(any ISP) this will cost you ?p per minute depending on when youtry. But see if you can connect by doing this

When Freeserve was my ISP and I dialled in using a POTS [Plain old telephone system] line:
If for some reason the [freephone] line I was using to dial in was poor, then I phoned up tech support, they pulled up my details on their computer, asked me to identify myself and give my password, then allocated me a new number to connect with.
I think an important part of all this was MY telephone number.
I could only connect from my number to the number they gave me and he would set up that arrangement as we were speaking.
In other words, he was telling their computers to allow my number access to their server modems at the specified number.
Permission had been granted and my number was to be allowed access, but only to that new number.
I was instructed to try it out and get back if it didn't work.

If Freeserve didn't prevent you from doing what you're trying to do, you could give your account details to all your friends and they could all get unmetered access to the internet on your account using the freephone number they provide !!!!!!

You cannot by-pass these protections by giving your friends your details and password because only one line will be registered for unmetered access. It would be crazy to make that line other than the one used by the person paying the bills.

I suppose you set up the account [in his name or yours I wonder] and gave your telephone number.
If he's going to pay the bills, it should be rgistered in his name and set up for use on his number and only he should know the password.

Easiest way to see if it is freeserve or something else is to use the internet connection wizard to sign up for a new account with someone else - a pay as you go account.
Then try browsing around with this account, and if all is well, then the finger is pointing towards freeserve, or it's configuration on the machine.
You don't lose anything by doing this, except for 10p or so for the phone line use - after that you don't have to use it agian if you don't want to.
