Apparently some Zip drives will connect through the floppy drive controller, but not all do, so you will need to check by actually looking in the box to see how it is set up. It sounds like the Windoze driver for the floppy drive is installed wrong. If you are not using the Zip, I would disconnect it, Remove the floppy and Zip drives in Device Manager and let Windoze reinstall the floppy driver.
Worry about the Zip drive if you get the decided to use it later and get some disks to use it with. Personally, I would go with a CDRW. The drives can be had for as little as $10 and the disks are much cheaper than Zip disks (which tend to run about $10 per disk) for only 100megs.
If you still have trouble, post back with details.

thank you for you reply I took off the zip and I reinstall windows and it works fine now thanks. one other question. This computer when you put shutdown it goes all the way and tell you it is okay to shut down windows but it does not shut it down it just say it is okay to. in xp professional you can correct this problem in power management but 98 it does not offer any solution that I can see for this. like I said earlier this is a 98se edition 300mh p2 pc. Any help is appreciated. Thanks and thanks again for all response.
For those who is coming into the know.

I remember my first computer that shut down automatically when I closed Windoze... I panicked for a while and then figured out that it was supposed to do that. I found it irritating for a long time, but I have grown to accept it...:D
Anyway, my point is that older computers didn't have that shutdown hardware thing built in and you did have to turn it off when you were done. Unless I am mistaken, your computer is working as intended.

If you type MSCONFIG and then look for the "Disable Fast shutdown" (or words to that effect)
(cannot check exactly location as I am not on win98 machine at moment)
If this has a tick in it (selected) remove the tick and reboot.
You should now be able to shutdown as you want.
