Got 2 problems. 1st: proper location of the PCI Ethernet card
2nd: error installing scanner.
Ok, here goes, while trying to install my scanner, got some windows messages. The first one :Windows detected new hardware:"PCI Ethernet card",then when I hit "next" Windows wanted to know where this item needed to be installed. I have no idea where it should go. I assume that this is from trying to install the scanner. So, I let windows try to install it for me. To make a long story short after all was said and done, I looked in the device manager and under "other devices" I found a yellow ? and beside it was "PCI Ethernet card"? along with the scanner info that I am trying to install. I deleted both items from the "Device Manager" did a reboot to go to the "Bios" (Phoenix) to make sure that the PNP/PCI config was set to enabled, which it was, then I tried to make sure that the scanner cable was set on bi-dir and could not locate the config for the parallel port while in the bios, so I don't know if it is on bi-dir or not. Next, I went to the Device Manager agin and looked under SCSI Controllers and highlighted the HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter and removed it. I then closed the device man and restarted the computer. Once again I got "Windows Detected New Hardware" (pci et card)along with the scanner info. Everytime I delete this info, Win wants to know where to install the card and I don't know. Also, I don't know what I am doing wrong on the installation of the scanner. I have tried everything and am at my wits end. If anyone out there can help me, it will keep me from going bald and being extremely frustrated.

1. what operating system are you using?

2. Is PNP/OS enabled or disabled in your bios?

3. Do you have an existing and working ethernet card?

4. In device manager, does the ethernet card use IRQ 7?

5. In integrated peripherals in BIOS, what are your settings for parallel port?

6. What is scanner's connectivity, USB ?

7.Printer? Parallel, serial, USB?

Ans to #1: OS / Win98SE
#2: PNP/OS enabled (I think, need to double check)
#3: New ethernet card (VIA Tech 3038 PCI )
#4: #7 IRQ showes to be hooked up to printer Port LPT1
#5: Not sure on #5
#6: Scanners connectivity: parallel port
#7: printer is USB
I also have a print out of the Resource Summary Report if it will help?

Post the report, with listing of IRQ resources.

Also, try to check your BIOS settings. PNP/OS may be under the Boot Menu and Parallel Port settings are under either Integrated peripherals or I/O Device Configuration.

Is your printer an HP or is your scanner or both?

If you have PNP/OS enabled, I think 98 is having trouble configuring and is asking you what you want to do. Maybe we can give the BIOS a chance to sort it by disabling PNP/OS.

I think you’ve probably failed to install the driver for your Ethernet Card as indicated by the fact it has been listed under “Other Devices”.
Probably the BIOS has identified it as a PCI Ethernet Card, but the driver files would have been more specific and identified the category of device under which it should be listed.
My guess is that because you have failed to point it at the driver “.inf” file, windows doesn’t have all the parameters necessary to fully categorise it so it asked “where” to put it [on the hardware tree].

You should have a driver disk with instructions on how to install the driver.
Here are what my instructions say.

Windows 98/98-SE Installation Procedure
-------------------------------------------------
It is recommended that you complete the Windows 98 installation without
the adapter card in the system.

1. Shutdown the computer and install the NETGEAR FA330/FA331 PCI Adapter into the system.
2. Start your Windows 98 system normally.
Upon power up, the system will pop-up the "Add New Hardware Wizard" window and indicate to you that a new PCI Ethernet Controller has been found.
3. Insert the Driver and Diagnostics disk and click on "Next".
4. Select the "Search for the best driver for your device(Recommended)" radio button and click on "Next".
5. Select only "Floppy disk drives" and click on "Next" in the next Add New Hardware Wizard window.
The driver disk should still be in the floppy disk drive.
The next window should indicate that the "NETGEAR FA330/FA331 PCI Adapter" has been found.
6. Click on "Next" when Windows prompt to obtain its driver from "A:\NETFA33X.INF".
9. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM and click on OK when asked to provide the disk labeled "Windows 98 CD-ROM".
This step might be skipped by the system if Windows 98 is installed from the Windows CAB files already residing on the hard disk or if the Windows 98 CD-ROM is still in the CD-ROM drive
10. When asked where to find the "CHOOSUSR.DLL", enter the directory location of the Windows CAB files and click on "OK".
If your CD-ROM drive uses the driver letter D, you have to enter "D:\WIN98". Many systems already come with the Windows CAB files on the hard disk driver. Nomally the Windows CAB files reside on the "C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS" directory.
The system starts copying files. This step might also be skipped if Windows 98 is installed from the Windows CAB files already residing on the hard disk.
11. Click on "Finish" at the last "Add New Hardware Wizard" window.
12. Click on "Yes" when asked if you want to restart the system.
13. Remove the driver disk and the Windows 98 CD-ROM when the system reboots.

You may be asked to reboot the system a second time to finalize the driver settings.
