what is a good(read maximum safe) idle temp for a processor and what is a good temp for when the computer is really working. Right now my 2600+ Athlon is running at 38C, should i try to lower it

That looks like a pretty respectable temp. You might want to have a look here and check out if you're a cool dude!

Idle temps in the 30s are fine. Full load temps in the 50s are fine. ;)
