Hi all,
I have a hp pavillion Me. My cdwriter plus worked yesterday but today it won't read any disc. I put a disk in and click on the icon and I get a message " please insert a cd in the cd-rom drive" It is also a writer and won't recognize any discs that I had created from it.
Thanks

Hello and welcome! A few weeks ago I was having the same problem. Click this link and it should be able to walk you through fixing it. One of these steps should be able to fix your problem as long as it's not a hardware malfunction.

Boot into safe mode, go to Device Manager and see if the drive shows up more than once or if any conflicts show up.

Restart your system and as the machine prepares to enter Windoze, start tapping on the F8 key. It should take you to a boot menu which includes the option of Safe Mode.

Ok, I restarted in safe mode, once in safe mode I checked the device manager and it didn't even show I have a cd drive, all the others were there.

I haven't heard of that ever happening, but I'm sure there's somebody else here who would be glad to help you figure this out. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

Well, I would double check in Safe Mode to see if you can find the drive, look under any likely section.
If you still don't find it, it suggests that it could be a hardware problem. I would check all connections and maybe even test the drive in another computer....

Thanks for all the help, I think I am going to end up and get a new drive and install it myself. Our local BB takes at least 1 month to fix anything. I hope it isn't too hard

Installing a new drive is usually pretty straightforward and easy, but I would check connections and test the drive in another machine if you can. If it won't work in another machine, it is a bad drive. If it will work in another machine and it isn't a loose connection, then it is a software problem.
