I have WinMe and whenever I shut down, the pc will shut down and after a couple of seconds reboot. The restart button is not stuck because if the computer is running it will reboot the system when push the switch. I ran Norton virus and no virus detected. Any help other than replacing the motherboard?

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

Replacing the motherboard is unlikely to be helpful anyway, this is most likely a software problem. You may have some program running that calls for a reboot.

I don't know what you level of computer expertise is, so pardon me if this is too simple. Are you sure you don't have Shut Down set to Restart. WinME remembers the last setting chosen, so if you don't change it, it will stay the same.

Next option: use msconfig to disable unnecessary Startup programs. Go to Start, Run and type msconfig. When it opens, go to the Startup Programs tab and see what you have running. I would probably uncheck everything except Systray and Explorer and then Close the window. If will say you need to reboot to have the changes take effect. I would do a full Shut Down at this point and see if it reboots. If it doesn't, it means one of your Startup programs was causing the problem. You can go to Startups (http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm) and check to see what each program is and whether it is needed. Or you can download Hijack This and post the results here so that we can see what might be causing the problem. It is available through mjc's security thread. (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15179)

If your computer reboots even after disabling most of the Startup programs, it may be a hardware problem.

My neighbor's emachine does the same thing. I'm not sure what causes the problem but the fix in his case was incredibly simple - flip off the surge protector strip right after the computer shuts off :)

Had a similar problem with a 98se machine - trying to shut it down merely caused it to reboot. Even using the soft-off power button option also rebooted instead of shutting down. Cant actually offer advice on how to fix it as it suddenly started working properly after several months without any inteference from me.
Thought this was an interestingly similar occurence.

I've tried all the above except the link from ErnieK. I have the latest Norton and no viruses, I have spybot and no bad spyware. Shut off all but the systray in startup and no go. No wake on setting set. No alerts on system settings. This all started after I had to restart when the system froze. I normally just turn it off on the power supply switch after it shuts down. It works but is kind of a pain. I'll keep playing. :p

The wake on settings are in the BIOS, have you checked there??

Both modem and wan were enable, so was PME. I disabled both and it shuts down now and stays that way. Thanks!:)
