i've got a stick of 64mb pc133 ram, and when it's in slot 2 on my motherboard everything works fine. no problems at all. when i put it in a different slot, say slot 0 or 1, things start going wrong in games such as quake3arena and serious sam (they freeze up or very rarely spit me out to windows and my display is messed up). occasionally windows98 goes blue screen on me and things go slow (ie opening windows explorer or trying to shut down) but not that often. i've got another stick of ram, 128mb pc133, and in any slot on the mobo it seems to cause the same problems - even when it's in the trusty slot 2.

how on earth could this be happening? i even tried another dimm, a friend's, and it still didn't work.

my mobo has a VIA VT82C693 chipset but i don't know much else about it (how would i find out, if it's necessary?). in the manual it says it supports ecc using parity dram modules, and banks of different dram types and depths can be mixed. is there anything in the bios i should be looking at? it just seems really strange that only one slot and one dimm are compatible.

i appreciate any help.
thanks.

You can check differnt settings in BIOS like CAS (try setting all slots to CAS3)or timing settings, whether the ECC is on or off(most of the time it should be off unless you DO have ECC memory), but what you describe also sounds like a dirty slot or one in which the stick is not completely seated (this can happen if the particluar slot has never been used before). Try inserting and removing the stick several times, making sure that it seats all the way. You can also try cleaning the slot, first with a shot of air, then with a shot of contact cleaner (just be sure to get one tha is marked "safe for computers")

The manual for your M/B should specify the order that ram modules (sticks) of varying sizes should be inserted into the several banks. Such as 128 in slot 0, 64mb in slot 1, 32 in slot 2. As had be mentioned, insure the contacts on the sticks and the slots are clean and insure the sticks are fully seated. I've never mixed ECC and non-ECC and don't know one way or the other that it's recommended. I've always used only non-ECC, a wallet issue, and enabled ECC in BIOS. My Windoze98 runs best at CL3. I've changed the BIOS to 2, trying to tweak for speed, and problems have cropped up http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
