View Full Version : >Scanner .jpg missing
I've developed a problem with my Cannon N676U scanner software, which is Scangear Toolbox. When using the save option I scanned two documents and saved using the same filename, the second file was saved as a .PNG (a Netscape extension) instead of .JPG(default). After that all scans were .PNG.
After reinstalling Scangear and scanning one document the .PNG default reappeared.
I've changed Netscape's association default to another type, but it keeps defaulting to .JPG.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

I am a little vague on your problem, but can you not go to a File menu in your Scangear, choose Save As, and then when confronted with naming and saving dialog box, use drop down arrow in the file type area and choose the type of file you wish to save it as? Many programs tend to save in the same type as was used/chosen last. For example, if I save a file as a tiff file in my graphics program, I have to be careful and use the drop down box the next time to choose that program's file extensions/format..unless I want another tiff file.
The save option has three save as default formats BMP, JPEG and TIFF and you can't change these, but when I save as JPG it changes to PNG. That is my problem.

Well, sorry, but I am clueless. From what you said, I gather you've already checked through Folder Options and File Types for association problems. I am unfamilar with ScanGear, but maybe you can "send" the scan to another app..like in my scanner software, I can scan, then there are two little editing type apps in the scanner software to play with, and then can save scan from one of those apps. Or maybe try saving as a tiff file, then converting somewhere else..like the Imaging program that comes with 98?
When you say that you've "developed" a problem..what did you do or install just before the problem? And which OS are you using?

Just as Kay is suggesting try the following.
As a work around until some one comes up with correct answer could you not scan then open the file in photo-editing prog and resave as JPG.
That is what I do when I come up against this problem when using PaperPort It aleays defaults to its own file format)
(by the way JPEG and JPG are the same file type I think)
Thanks for your suggestions, I've deleted Netscapes File Types associations and seemed to have solved the problem for now and will try to figure out later why Netscape insists on taking over these File extensions.

I am gonna blame bad memory..I had forgotten that when I installed PaintShopPro for the first time that it had changed the file extensions. It was my fault in that case, but my husband installed MGI PhotoSuite on his puter and didn't see any "options" go by and it "ate" all his image files too.
fcug..sorry to take so long to figure out problem. I would recommend checking Netscape's Help files, or FAQs on their website. But also, here is a good link for changing file associations back if an app has eaten all of certain files.
Changing File Associations (http://familyinternet.about.com/library/weekly/aa032901a.htm)
Edit: When I first installed PSP, it popped up a box for the File Types. I thought it meant which types of files I wanted to "open" in PSP, but it meant which files to "associate" with psp. So, you might check for a setting in Netscape because all I had to do was go into Preferences in my PSP app, and uncheck all those "extra" file types. It still "opens" them and reads them just fine..it just doesn't appropriate them.
Thanks again kayofcircles for your suggestions, which I will try.
I use PSP and Photoworks (which was my default .JPG) and hope that I can correct the problem.

Well, I have a question for you, if you don't mind. I can see a certain advantage to having a photo app open jpgs because that way, if jpgs are in higher resolutions, "all" of the jpg shows in the photo app whereas Internet Explorer uses Windows resolution of 98 ppi, and you don't see all of the pic if jpg is 200 or 300 in resolution. But does that mean that you don't "see" the jpg in an email?? When I send jpgs through Hotmail, I always send myself a blind carbon copy..and when it arrives in my OE box, I see the jpg in the message. Do you? Or do you have to "open" the jpg?
In OE Inbox I see the jpg in the message with the split windows, but when I double click and open the message into one full widow I have to click on the attachment to open the jpg,
By the way, there are .jpg and .jpeg extensions

Thanks, was just curious. And jpg and jpeg are the same..just different designations for same type of file.
If by split window you mean the Preview feature in OE, which I do use..you need to be careful about clicking on an email if you're uncertain about where it came from because some "bad" stuff can activate just by using the Preview feature. I get the majority of my email over at Hotmail, but the very few times that something comes in to my OE box that I am uncertain about, I have to go and turn off the Preview function, and check Message source and such before opening the mail. I usually just Delete it if I don't know where it came from, but I can't even do that without turning off the Preview stuff first because you have to click on the message to Delete it.
