i cannot change my resolution from 640x480 and the video driver listed is a m.s generic windows driver. My video card is ans3 trio 3d/2x but it is not listed under device manager, i tried reloading win98 but problem is still there, should i try formatting hard drive. I am running win 98 20 gig hd and 160 meg of ram
You may have to download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturer of the video card...they should include instructions on how to proceed...

NO, do not reformat.
1st of all, have the software for that fancy video card in hand and for the monitor as well.
Under Device Manager remove "generic" display driver and associated "generic" monitor installed by windoze. If the monitor is correctly identified under device manager then do not delete it.
After reboot and Win98 PlugNpray recognizes new hardware; insert and install the video card drivers from the CD and monitor driver which is likely on a floppy. Windoze may be fully capable of installing a compatible monitor driver. They used some of that 650mb CD for a huge number of drivers. When the appropriate time pops up, select Have Disk and select driver and directory when and if necessary.
An alternative, before deleting and rebooting, is to insert the video card driver CD and allow it to auto-boot or RUN D:\setup.exe (D:\ if that's your CD-ROM drive). Select install drivers. Then delete and reboot as described above. When Windoze reports new hardware, direct windows to search the directory that you loaded the drivers into.
http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif Are there any devices within device manager that have red X's or yellow exclamation marks. And are any listed at "other devices". These aspects should be resolved or at least answers in hand before proceeding. They may devices that also need driver installation and are likley contained on the video card CD or the motherboard driver CD.
