I am unable to connect to my service provider on one of my computers.
The provider starpower detects the modem as a voice telephone connect
and rejects the connect.
I have reloaded windows 95B internet explorer changed modems cable to
telephone line. The protocol is the same on both computers for dial up.
I am running WINDOWS 95B pentium 233 mhz 256K memory intel 56K modem
tried 28.8 modem maxtor 20 gb hard drive.
Power supply voltages checked with digital meter all normal. With this
exception computer normal. The problem developed slowly difficult
connect no connect and then no connect at all.

Any suggestions appreciated thank you for your help.

Hello James!

Is the Intel modem a hardware or software modem?

A few suggestions...

Have you checked in SAFEMODE, Device Manager to see if there are any conflicts or problems there?

In CONTROL PANEL>MODEMS PROPERTIES>DIAGNOSTICS>MORE INFO...see if everything checks out...

Reloading the OS probably cleaned the slate of the possibility of "Ghost Driver," but with the present difficulties, I would check in SAFEMODE>DeviceManager>Modem and make sure there are not any dual listing. If there are, highlight and REMOVE all instances...reboot and let Windoze find the modem and reload the drivers.

I think it is safe to assume you have a software modem. I had trouble connecting to my ISP using a USR 56K winmodem on a P166 machine. I bought a Creative Modem Blaster ISA (controller based) off ebay for ten bucks and now I have a great connection. If you can find a USR or Creative ISA Controller modem, it might solve your problem.
Did you already switch in a different 28.8 modem to try? I'm not sure from your post.

Hi there Kala
Have you run a Diagnostic on your modem at computer level?

Go to Control Panel and right cick on the modem. Then choose Properties and Diagnostics. (You might have to click on Advanced button to find the diagnostics button)

This will let you know if the modem is being properly recognised by your computer.

When you're ISP software locates your modem does it have any problems identifying it?

If your ISP configuration allows it, you may want to see if you can manually identify the modem for it...

If all else fails, you may need to contact your ISP and let them know what's up...
