Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

I would not take it apart unless you are prepared to give up on recovering data and prepared to use the shiny disks in an art project. Unless you have a clean room and special data recovery equipment, opening the drive is a sure fire way to kill it. The freezing technique apparently may give you a small window of opportunity to back some of it up, but it is a one shot deal and if the drive wasn't already broken, it is likely to break it. I hope you don't have a lot to back up.

The good news is that hard drives can be found for some excellent prices these days. Often less that $1/gig after rebates.

I am not sure I understood what you said you are going to do, but if I did, I hope you have a very nice funeral planned for that poor deceased hard drive.... :p

I thought maybe exchanging parts from a simular not needed drive.
I understand this stuff will be trash, but maybe I'll get lucky.
I'm in no rush so I'll sit on this one for a while.
But I thank you for your insight on this subject.
I will always look foward to your replys.
