I put together a system this weekend and everything works fine except that when i do a soft reboot from windows or go into the BIOS and come out I get no video signal back to the monitor. If I completely shut down the machine or if i hit the reset button it works fine. I tried switching out the video card and also hooked up to a different monitor and I still have the same problem. Any ideas? I am pretty sure it is a BIOS or MB problem but have no idea what to set that I havent already tried. Here are the system specs:

Gigabyte GA-7DXR motherboard
Athlon 1.4Ghz cpu
3 - 256MB PC2100 DDR
60 GB IBM hard drive
ATI Radeon 32MB DDR video card
Netgear 10/100 ehternet pci card
Sony 50something CD-ROM
Plextor 16/10/40A CD-RW

Here is a link to the motherboard manual: http://ftp.gigabyte.com.tw/support/user_pdf/7dxr_02_1.pdf

Thanks!

Just a wild guess: In BIOS, is the video set to initialize AGP, or PCI first?

Hey,

Also, turn off all power management options in BIOS. See if that helps.

Are there any conflicts showing up in Device Manager?

I dont see anything in the BIOS to change that. This board also has the ability to use an AGP Pro card and if it is used it says a power connector like one to a hard drive must be plugged into the mother board. The card is not AGP Pro, do you think it would hurt it to try that?

That was in response to the first suggestion. I tried the other already.

Actually it would. If I am correct here, if you setup the motherboard for an AGP pro card even though you don't have one, you will have to purchase one now or buy a new motherboard. Does the slot have a small sticker ofer the end specify something to the effect of AGP Pro. Unless you want to use an AGP Pro card, don't remove this?

Looking through the manual here. there appears to be a jumper on the motherboard for a feature to overvolt the agp card. Make sure this is set to the default value. In the BIOS there are a few things in the Advanced Features Setup:

AGP Aperture Size: 128MB
AGP Fast Write: Disabled
AGP Mode: 1x/2x
AGP Always Compensate: Disabled

Try these values and then is the problem goes away, re-enabled each indivually and power the system to test. Hope this helps.

Edited to add:

Also, inside the Integrated Peripherals, you will find a setting to set the VGA boot:

VGA Boot From: AGP

Try removing your Netgear card. I have the same problem. My soft reboot problem starting occuring when I installed a Netgear FA311TX. I checked my IRQs and there were no conflicts. My Netgear card works fine, except for the soft reboot problem. When I take the Netgear card out of my system, everything works perfectly, including soft rebooting. I called Netgear's tech support three times and they were unable to help.

I sometimes have a similar problem as a result of the Energystar/save option on the monitor. I may have the wrong term here but it is the thing that helps save your hydro bill by trickling power to the monitor to barely keep it awake. If I do a soft boot the little diode starts flashing on the monitor,it is in this state and I am forced to shut off and start again.

I just wanted to let you all know that I have been reading the responses. I just haven't had a chance to get over to their house and try any of them yet. I will probably go over tonight and let you know how I make out.

It was the Netgear card. Thanks for the help.
