Hello,

I have a problem with my modem.

My modem is installed but I cannot make a connection. I think I have to change something from the BIOS settings but I don't remember what. Could it be to Disable the Serial ports? I used to have my modem on IRQ 5 which was LPT2. I have loaded the CMOS defaults. And when I put it back on IRQ 5 it doesn't work anymore. I remember on my modem properties COM3 and COM4 where open (radion buttons). Now it asks me to choose between COM1 and COM2 (drop-down menu). Of course it will not work on COM1 and COM2. Can you plz help me?

I am using Windows 98 SE

Thanks

Hello Andy,

I would first try using SAFEMODE and go into Device Manager. Highlight "all" instances of a Modem and click on the Remove button. Reboot and let Windoze find and reinstall.

If you are not successful with SAFEMODE...What other PCI devices do you have? Is this a software or hardware modem...what make and model?

Before the SAFEMODE "extraction" mentioned above, would you try DEVICE MANAGER in normal Windoze and see what it says under the Resources tab in the Conflicts dialogue box...

Hello Whyzman,

I just fixed my problem before reading your reply. What I did was..I uninstalled my modem from Device Manager and I rebooted my pc to the BIOS settings. From there I disabled both serial ports. It worked. As soon as I reinstalled the modem, it automaticaly went to COM2--and only COM2--there was no other option. And my internet connection was fine from then on. Thanks :)
