OS: Win 98

Windows doesn’t see my modem for some reason so I go into System Properties, Device Manager, select my modem, click on Properties and get the error message, "Cannot read Port name from Registry." Everything looks normal in setup: IRQs, memory addresses, ports, etc. seem to have the correct settings. This happens whether in install the modem on COM1 or COM2. What’s causing this error message and how can I correct it?

I removed the modem, I ran wimredgel.exe from my Win98 CD to get rid of registry keys following the instructions on the above link, disabled (separately) the COM1 and COM2 ports in setup per another's person's recommendation, and tried a few other tricks. I continue to get the same message, "Cannot read port name from registry."

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the placement of the pins on the modem. Bear with me because this is going to sound very non-technical. But when I look down at the top of the modem, as if it were in my machine, the pins are on the RIGHT side, forcing me to put it in one of the shorter (white) slots rather than on the LEFT side which would allow me to put it in a longer (black) slot. Does this make any difference?

Thanks for your help.

By white and black slots, do you mean that your motherboard has both PCI and ISA slots? If so a PCI modem wont work in an ISA slot, if it is internal.
