I'm trying to repair a Gateway computer (thank god it's not mine). The mouse and keyboard stop working after about 5-10 seconds. They will both work in safemode. Keyboard will work in the BIOS setup. I tried the following. Reloaded the OS, checked for conflicts in device manager(none), tried to change settings in the BIOS(none there for mouse or keyboard), no IRQ conflicts. Both are PS/2 connectors built into the motherboard. I get an "keyboard error" in the post with no code. I was thinking of replacing all the boot files with the boot disk files from my machine, but I don't know how to do that. I've got way too many hours into this piece of. Please help!!!

Try a new keyboard...could be a bad contact somewhere on the board or just dirty. Same with the mouse.

Also are the proper dirvers for both installed?

Are they running on the generic MS drivers?

Both keyboard and mouse work fine on my machine. I'm using generic MS drivers. I don't think it is a contact, mouse or keyboard. I think it is a driver issue or a boot issue for those drivers. The thing that kills me is that they will work for 10-15 seconds and then die, yet there is no problems in safe mode. I also tried it with 2 seperate Win98 OS's. I'm lost.

Don't mean to be a pest. Anyone have some ideas?

hmmm...boot into safe mode and remove the keyboard and the mouse there...since they both work in safe mode they are being deteected by Windows. Also check for "ghost drivers" while in safe mode and remove them also.
