Hello to all,

Can anyone tell me if older DSL modems will work with the newer DSL services. I have a DSL modem (internal)that is about 3 years old. SBC told me that the older modem would not work. I am however, skeptical due to the fact that they want you to purchase a newer one for obvious reasons. Surely the basic DSL service is still the same and the older modem would work. Any thoughts?

Kindest regards

Ron

Different DSL services require different equipment. It isn't like standardized dialup modems that use regular phone lines. I am still using the modem I got when I got my DSL service which has been 3 or 4 years, but I wouldn't be able to use it with some other DSL services. You could certainly give it a try, but if they say it isn't compatible, I am guessing that it isn't.

Thanks Budfred

It will not hurt to try. I guess the driver for the modem is now the issue. It was a modem that came from a Compaq machine. I can't tell the brand though. It has a Compaq sticker but Texas Instruments chips all over it.

If it is like dialup modems, it will have a FCC code on it. You can go to FCC (http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/) to find out what the modem is....
