i just upgraded my computor from ms440gx mb with pentium 3 xenon to a k7s5a pro mb with a 1.3 ghz amd duron processor. i had my old hard drive installed into this mb which is a IBM DRVS09V SCSI disk device 8 gb mem. and i also go a new hard drive WDC WD800BB-00CAA1 with 80 gb mem. the new hard drive is my c: drive and a NTFS and the old one is in my f: drive called RAW. i have noticed sometimes explorer won't detect it when i start my comp. or just before it loads it automatically runs a CHKDSK on my f: drive. and then when windows loads up and i try to open explorer up it takes about 10 mins for it to load up correctly and i know it is doing something with my f: drive. i have went into comp. management and it says everything is working correctly when it can detect it, when it can't detect it i can only see my c: drive. i am using windows xp pro sp1. do you think there is a compatiblity issue or something with the new mb? pls help.

The intermittent nature smacks of a loose or otherwise faulty connection somewhere.

You could use a copy of my diagnostic charts.
Send me a private message requesting a copy of these [zipped or not] and giving an e-mail address to send them to.
One of them was supplied by Yoda74 and covers the HDD in detail.
For example:
Here’s one route through it [the longest].
HARD DRIVE
1. Does the BIOS register the drives? No.
2. Is this a problem with a CD or DVD drive? No.
3. Does the drive spin up? Yes.
4. Is the drive mode correct? Yes.
5. Does the drive accept [partitioning by fdisk or] an O/S? Yes.
6. Does the O/S boot? Yes.
7. Is it slow/noisy? No.
8. Does it cycle on/off? No.
9. Are there data errors? Yes.
10 Check for loose cables; viruses; re-format.
