Just recently when i turn on my computer the thing makes a terrible noise :(
I think ive traced it to the fan on the PSU which spins slowly and creates a lot of noise for about ten minutes the things go back to normal.... only to be repeated at the next boot up.
Is it time for a new PSU?... If so i want to get a good quality one, any recommendations? also what kind of stuff should i look out for?
What voltage should it be??
At some stage im going to add more fans so it will need lots of juice and connectors?
Thanks for any help :)
P.S I live in the UK so will that make any impact on what i need to buy?

Thanks again
Yeah, I guess it would be a good idea...you can replace the fan by itself, but it is probably better jsut to replace the entire PSU and do a little upgrade in the process.

Here is good page about power supply (http://members.shaw.ca/need4speed/Power%20Supply%20Choices.htm) concepts and a good review of brands. (http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20021021/index.html)
As you will see if you read this material, the quality of the PS often matters more than the wattage...

Thanks for the help budfred after reading the articles you led me to ive decided to get a new
Antec TruePowver 430 12V AC 430W ATX
at £70 it aint cheap  but it should be worth it :)
but back to what mjc was saying...could i replace the fan or should i just chuck the whole unit???
Anyway thanks again guys... :)

Hmm I would say don't open of the PSU unless you know what your doing. There are capacitors inside that could give you a nasty jolt. If it's a simple looking PSU you could try to replace the fan. But just be careful. I would go with the new Tru-power PSU it's the one I have and it not only is it a PSU it actually does some filtering of the power or I should say it makes the power more consistent. Good choice.

The Antec is a good choice and that price is not too far off what it would cost here, a bit more pricey I think.
Replacing the fan is not a really big deal since the amount of power contained in the capacitors of the power supply is not that great, but it could, as Variable said, give you a bit of a jolt if you are not very careful. If you are pretty confident working with electrical stuff, you could certainly change it and keep the PS around as a backup....
