View Full Version : HELP......HDD problem
I repartionned my Extended drive by creating two logical drives (D and E). I can see that my drive c is intact and still has all the files and everything looks good when I display all the partitions. Now....when i boot the computer, it stops at PCI device list and does NOT proceed from there.....what could be wrong?????

Have you made the C partition active?
Is there any message at the bottom of the screen when it stops responding? Anything about DMI pool? Does it ask you to insert system disk?
Yes...i made the C drive active and after device listing...the cursor just blinks.....

Have you tried entering SafeMode by pressing F8 while it is booting? If you can get into safemode, you can check your drives and look for any problems in Device manager, run scandisc, etc.
OK...now it boots with a horrible display....I started in Safe mode to re-install the video card driver and during the set up process...i get the message: SETUP WAS UNABLE TO COMPLETE INSTALLATION. TRY TO SETUP YOUR DISPLAY ADAPATER WITH A STANDARD VGA DRIVER BEFORE SETUP...Again...all this was workign finr prior to re-configuring the extended partition...any advice on this so I could go on with my life?

Ok, something went wrong and Windows is now confused. To install the standard VGA driver look at this link (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q193/1/56.asp&NoWebContent=1) and follow the instructions under "Video Adapter Driver Conflict"
Then try to reinstall your regular drivers. Once you do that, go to Device Manager and check for any yellow exclamation marks.

Which OS is this?
What did you use to partition the HDD?
Dependent on OS.
Rather than F8 > safe mode - try F8 > VGA mode.
May also be able to customise boot.ini by adding a line with a VGA switch and give yourself the option to boot "normally" or into VGA mode./basevideo switch (http://www.systemsbysteve.com/winguides/bootiniswitches.htm)
Hello Guys:
What happened is while I was in SAFE MODE, that error message kept coming up. I rebooted in normal mode, re-installed the driver for the video card and changed the pixels accordingly in display and everything got fixed. Lesson to be learned: When you partition your drive, do it the RIGHT WAY from the beginning. Obviously, something got messed up (like the VGA driver). My drive is now partionned right and things look good, thanks again guys for your great advice and concern!

Whenever you "mess" with partitions on a functioning system, always backup your stuff/create an image of your drive beforehand.
That's the lesson to remember. ;)
