It sounds like your modem and your mouse are both trying to use the same serial port. Check your settings for both in Device Manager and post back what you find. You will need to get one of them on another port...

Thanks Budfred for reply:
In device mgr my mouse is not listed.
It works fine though until I try to connect.I assume the mouse should be listed also?
How do I get the mouse on another port?
Is there something in BIOS I have to change?
 Any replys for this novice newbie appreciated.:o

Sorry, I haven't used a serial mouse for a while. You would check the Serial ports in Device Manager and I think they may be listed under Ports or I/O Ports or something like that.
As for changing it, we will probably need to know more about what you are working with to figure that out. Computer specs, what version of Windoze and so forth. Also, I just need to remember how that is done or someone who already remembers needs to drop in....
The other thing is that if you have a USB port, you may want to use a USB mouse. I am guessing you don't if your computer is old enough to be using a serial mouse, but you could add a USB card if you wanted...
I am going to take WAG at this and say that your mouse is on COM1 and your Modem is using COM3 (could be 2 and 4 also).
If thisa is an ISA modem that will allow you to set a seires of jumpers to assing it a COM then set it to use COM2 or 4 (if it is on 1 or 3).
Or if you have two serial ports on the computer make sure the mouse is using COM2.
You can check the assignment in Device Manager, but this sounds like a classic IRQ conflict.

Thanks alot for replys!:p
So what your saying is that mouse and modem cannot be on 1 or3 or2 or4
together.
So if mouse was on say 2 and modem was on 3 it would work okay.
I believe I saw some jumpers on modem so will check that out.
The computer I am trying to fix is from 97 acerview no usb port.
I loaded windoze 98se on it recently and thats when the conflict started,as it had 95 on it before.

With your help I got the computer running again.
It was the jumpers on my us robotics modem.
I removed all 3 then reinstalled modem, computer detected modem on com3.
My serialmouse is on com4.
