View Full Version : Can these dead peripherals be revived?

Several months ago I moved, and was in a hurry to get my computer set up. Too much of a hurry, as I made a big mistake (didn't know it was a mistake at the time). I plugged everything into the surge suppressor and then plugged the surge suppressor into the wall outlet. The power automatically came on, and though the computer and monitor survived, the scanner and printer did not. The power lights wouldn't even come on! I tried them in different outlets and still nothing happened. They are both old enough to be out of warranty, and I tried calling a couple local repair places and their response was not very encouraging. Since then I have bought a new printer (don't like it as well as the old one though) and am borrowing a scanner. I have kept the old printer and scanner just in case they can be fixed. They were working fine until this happened.
Would it be possible to get these repaired? Would it be worth trying or would it likely end up costing too much?

I am not getting what caused the damage in the first place... Turning on the power shouldn't have hurt anything. Even if each component had its own power switch on, it still shouldn't have damaged anything.
I would check the printer and scanner thoroughly to make sure they are set up properly and that it isn't simply a bad connection or something like that. Make sure you didn't accidently switch the power cords.
If it turns out they really are dead, it will almost certainly cost you more than they are worth to even have a tech look at them. Fixing them from there is a long shot, so unless they have great sentimental value, I wouldn't do it. If they do have great sentimental value, I would consider turning them into planters or something else creative...

... and if you use fused plugs ... check the fuses.
Yeah, let us know what kind of power hookups these devices have, also what brands they are.

They may also have some type of reset switch on them. Try plugging them in to three different outlet to see if you get the same results. I also agree much cheaper to buy new than to get them repaired.
