My desktop with icons will not display after startup. My wallpaper image is the only thing that will display on the monitor screen. Does anyone know what needs to be done to correct this condition?

Hi JW, Welcome to the Forum http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Do you have your desktop set as "View as Web Page"?

(Assuming you have Win/9*, don't know if Win/ME is the same)

Right click on your desktop then select "Active Desktop" from the menu.
If there is a tick next to "View as Web Page" you can either de-select this option by clicking it or click on "Customize my Desktop" then click on the "Effects" tab and make sure that the "Hide icons when the desktop is viewed as Web Page" button is not selected.

Hope this works but if not post back http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

GeeBee76, I do not have a desktop to click on. Only my wallpaper displays. My operating system is Windows 98plus. My computer is a Northgate 500 mhz, Intel celeron. I think these guys built this computer in a garage somewhere in California and I live in Texas and it is out of warranty. Their techinal support line is always busy day & night. Sounds like I may not be the only one with mucho problems. If another earthquake hits California, Northgate will probably slip off into the Pacific Ocean and hopefully not make any more computers like mine. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi JW,

Hmmmm! So you have no icons or taskbar, just a background image.

I'm grasping at straws here, but

Do you have a cursor? Can you use the keyboard to bring up menu's (Ctrl/Esc) etc. I suppose you've already tried that.

Does the desktop display if you re-start in safe mode.

Try safe mode if you haven't already done so and post back.

HOWDY Geebee76, I've done all items that you've recommended and nothing works. Safemode only brings up the wallpaper display. I think I know what the solution to this problem is going to be. Pick up my Northgate computer, take a short little drive to the Gulf of Mexico and throw it as far as I can into the sea. Then git on my hoss and round up about 7 or 8 one hundred dollar bills and buy something other than Northgate or Compaq. Have you got any other suggestions on what NOT TO BUY! Thankyou for your moral support. I really like this forum. I git lots of grins from reading all the problems people have amd realize that my problems aren't so bad after all. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi JW,

Gulf of Mexico http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Just hope the Gulf Stream doesn't bring it my way http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think most of the manufacturers take shortcuts when it comes to component and build quality, such is the fierce competition in the PC marketplace. My next computer will definitely be a self build (Can't go far wrong with the help of a site like this).

I think your problem is software though and most likely Windows. There is probably a corrupt or missing file somewhere. If you haven't any important data on your computer you could consider a fresh install of Windows, unless someone else has any experience or other ideas on this one.

One last comment for today, folks. Today is SUNDAY! I'm leaving my home shortly to go to church and git churched up. I'll pray a prayer for all our computer problems. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Seriously, I'm a believer and hope all of you come to know JESUS as your personal savior before you are swept out into eternity.

Good site, Boo Radley. Thanks, have added it to my Favorites. Pop unders extremely annoying, but good search site nonetheless. Your "Boo Radley", is that from a John D. MacDonald book? Rings a distant memory bell.

"...suggestions on what NOT TO BUY!"
Based on my experience with a certain model of IBM Thinkpad: I will never, ever by any motherboard with an ALi (Acer Labs, Inc) chipset.

About Boo Radley: I could only think of a band, "...the Boo Radleys. The name comes from the shady character in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, but was chosen (in a pub) just because they liked the sound of it." (Quoted from a fansite (http://members.tripod.com/~workshy/bio.htm)).
