The computer in the warehouse at my work is freezing up after a certain amount of time. At first, it was freezing after I typed in the password to log in. Then, I noticed that if I worked faster I could actually log in but it would freeze as my desktop was coming up. Now, it just freezes before it gets to the control+alt+del window. I've tried Last Known Good Configuration but no luck. It will boot up in Safe Mode but I'm not sure what to do when I get there. Overall, I'm confused. I'd really appreciate anyone's help.

I'm using Windows 2000 Pro. I don't believe that anything new has been installed...and yeah...I've rebooted (too many times).

Bit of detective work is called for in that case.

Check control panel > system > devices
Does anything have an error sign?

Is there hard drive space available.. ie drive C isnt full?

Try running scandisk.. (trying to remember how its run in W2K)

Sounds like a program being run at startup. You should also check (if you are able) to see if any trojans/viruses are present - many will interupt logon procedures in order to control the computer.

I've already tried all that actually. Everything seems fine until I try to boot it up.

Have you tried chkdsk /f and fdisk /mbr. When you say warehouse, I imagine a big hot building. Is this a big hot building?
Whats the temp in the BIOS for your CPU and mainboard?

If you can boot up in safe mode you should disable all but the most basic start up programs and then reboot, each time you reboot activate one of the deactivated start up programs and then reboot, if it fails to reboot after activating a start up program that is your problem. If it won't boot up in safe mode it might be your bios settings are not correct. If that does not help you could try a complete system recovery that is usually the last resort but it does fix problems with the software; I must also point out that all of your files on the computer will be lost. If none of this helps to get your system running normally I would say that you have a hardware problem.

I did have a similar problem a few months ago but it turned out to be the bios settings. If you do get your computer working in safe mode backup any unsaved files.
