....To underclock a CPU?!

I recently put together a new system with an Asus A7n8x Deluxe with an Athlon XP 2600 processor. According to the website i bought this CPU from, this chip is supposed to be running around 2.13 Ghz, however, somehow on my system it is only running at 1.25 Ghz. whats wrong here, and what do I need to change to get my money's worth.

Yes, it is possible to underclock a CPU, all you have to do is lower the fsb. Now to answer your question, you probably need to get into BIOS and up the fsb to 166 to get 2600+ speed. To get into BIOS, press either F8 or ctrl+alt+del when the comp bootup.

The XP 2600 should run at 2.08 GHz.

The multiplier is 12.5

You now have your system clock set at 100MHz.

100 x 12.5 = 1250MHz or 1.25 GHz

You must enter the BIOS and set the CPU external frequency to 166

166 x 12.5 = 2075 MHz or 2.075 GHz

Turn your machine on and press DEL repeatedly as it boots.

In the BIOS go to the Advanced menu. Choose Advanced Chipset Features.

For External CPU Frequency set it to 166, save and exit.

You will now have your money's worth.;)
