View Full Version : My monitor
My monitor seems to be having a small problem. It is really fuzzy and there are alot of vertical lines. This problem corrects when the monitor has been in use for about twenty minutes. Is there an easy fix for this? Is the monitor shot? What does degauss mean?
Is this a new problem thats just developed or have you recently added new graphics card / monitor drivers?
Sounds like it might be a poorly monitor tho :(
btw, I found this explanation.. which is in simple language so I could understand it!
Ever wonder what that "degauss" button on your monitor does besides make a buzzing noise and cause the screen to go crazy for a second? Though that's its main purpose, the degauss button has another useful feature. To understand it, you'll first need to know that the earth has natural magnetic fields. The magnetic charges from these fields can build up inside your monitor, causing a loss of color accuracy. Degaussing scares the bad magnetism out of the monitor and fills it with good karma. If your monitor doesn't have a degauss button, fear not -- many new monitors automatically degauss themselves. If you have a flat-panel display, there is no degauss button because magnetism doesn't build up in flat screen displays.

Try the monitor on a different computer. If it does the same thing, then it's shot. And you get to go buy another one.
Degaussing won't help. Here's a definition:

I have tried that monitor on a different computer. It did the same thing so now I am sure that it is the monitor and not the video card or the mobo or anything. What if I was to repair this monitor rather than just trowing it out and getting a new one. What could the symptoms that I have described mean? Could this be an easy fix?

Even if it were an 'easy' fix you would probably find that it will cost almost as much to repair the old monitor as it would to buy a brand spanking new one.
I doubt it would be an easy fix, and there are dangerous voltage in a CRT monitor, even when it is turned off. Repair by a qualified technician is not likely to be cost-effective.
About degaussing, some of that is not quite correct. Last sentence should be, "If you have a flat-panel display (LCD), there is no degauss button because there is no electron beam to be deflected (or affected), as there is in a CRT, so magnetism does not affect them.".

You didn't say what kind of monitor you have. A 15" or 17" shouldn't be too expensive to replace.
It will probably be difficult (and dangerous) to fix unless you are a qualified repairperson. You could probably have it repaired by someone but it will undoubtedly cost you about the same as getting a new monitor.
Your best bet might be to watch the newspapers for a used monitor if cost is a consideration. People are always upgrading their monitors and selling their used but still good ones for not too much money.

My monitor seems to be fine now (for the most part). You'll never guess what I did. I formated the hard drive and reinstalled Windows! There is still a small problem on the left part of the screen, from the top to the bottom. They are moving vertical lines. They look like the wave lines that appear when you trow a rock in the middle of a pond - slightly rounded.

I used to have a monitor that had that kind of wavy thing, except that it was really hard to see most of the time. It had it for quite a while and one day it simply died. That is when I got my second LCD monitor....
You may want to keep an eye on ads for monitors... I suspect your's is fading fast...:(
